Usually, blood has to be removed within a few hours or it will leave a slightly yellow brown taint on white.

The previously mentioned suggestions of cold water, vinegar, baking soda, and of course, soap, are good. (not all at the same time though!). You can also add baking soda (up to 1/2 a cup) to a regular load of laundry as a color-safe detergent enhancer (instead of bleach). I don't know why the vinegar works, the soap (real soap - like Ivory) and the baking soda work because they are bases, and bases are effective at breaking up organic material.

Never use hot water (or the warm setting on a washing machine), or put a possibly still stained item in the dryer. Organic stains especially set in with the heat. Many stains sometimes look like they're gone when the cloth is wet, but shows back up when it dries, so just hang dry those items.

I know how to get blood off, but that's about it. RIGHT AWAY, wash the stain with a bar of white soap and water that you can quickly change from icey hot to lukewarm and then back again. Rub the soap onto the stain until there is a nice thick lather, then fold the stained area in half (with the stain and lather inside) and rub the two sides together. Rinse it off with the cold water and repeat with lukewarm water. Repeat again with cold water and then throw it in the washing machine with the normal settings and detergent. If you can machine dry your uniform, do that.

However, if the same spot gets stained over and over, there will eternally be a light brown spot.

Dear Sir Salad,
Hmmmm. That is quite a question. How to remove blood? Either you are quite sincere or this is a joke. I will just assume that you are a very sincere, hard-working janitor working in a mental hospital and answer your question seriously.
For a blood stain, soak your jumper in cold water for at least 30 mins. If it remains, soak in lukewarm ammonia water (3 tbsp per gallon) and then rinse. If it still remains, work in detergent and wash it.
For fresh blood stains, cold water should remove it. If large or difficult stain, add in a pinch of baking soda. NEVER put blood stains in hot water.
Good luck Sir!
Linda

To clean blood:

Take item of clothing to sink and immerse in cold water, NOT HOT (hot water will make the blood set). Swish item of clothing for a minute or two and then start scrubbing with a regular bar of soap. Try to do this as immediately as possible, the more the blood sets the harder it is to come out.

Other stains:

Depending on the color of your jumper, you could use bleach. If it's a dark color then I would try to treat the stains as soon as possible and hope for the best.

Sir Salad,
Get a new job. If that's not an option, buy some extremely strong detergent with Stain Out and use that. My sisters did an experiment using different kinds of detergents with Stain Out, and no matter what was on the cloth, the Stain Out got rid of the stain. Stain Out did remove blood quite well, though it was an accident, and dog blood (don't ask), it worked. But, if you're tired of disgusting stains, get a new job. (or try to find one) unless, that is, your current job pays well.
