lazy

Question Posted Monday March 14 2005, 10:35 pm

I used to be a fairly good student. However, this year(I'm in 11th grade) I have a total lack of motivation. I always do my work at the very last minute because it seems impossible to make myself do it earlier. I've had a lot of narrow escapes when it comes to handing in projects late and stuff, but I never seem to learn from it. It's like I've got the Lazy Disease and it can't be cured! But seriously, that's how I feel. I can never concentrate on my work. It's like I don't realize it's important and then I end up stressing out, but my experience doesn't do anything for next time. I really don't know what to do about this, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Additional info, added Tuesday March 15 2005, 4:20 pm:
I know this might not mean much, but I live in Quebec, so grade 11 means my last year of high school. So it can't get any worse next year :P.

Hmmm what's changed in you life, anything?
It is probably a normal stage. You've got make yourself get the work done.I'm bad about it myself.I guess I like the stress I don't know.

So long as you do get the work done I wouldn't worry to much about it.If you start just not doing anything...Thats really lazy.

You have junioritis. It's extremely common among juniors. You HAVE to take control. If you get home and just collapse in front of the tv, knowing full well that you have to do a big project, pick your butt up and do it! I'm pretty sure I know what goes through your head: "Oh man, I gotta do that math homework. After The Simpsons is over, I'll do it. No, wait, That 70's Show is after that." And you just never get around to doing it. Force yourself to go do your homework! In class, you have to take notes. To make it more interesting, you could write something like, "The founding fathers knew how important it was to provide freedom to Americans, so they created the first amendment. Then Mr. So-and-so (whatever your teacher's name is) decided to wear that hideous tie to scare away the redcoats." Make it interesting. But, the first step is to FORCE yourself to get up and do it.

This is called the begining stages of "Senioritis" or "Slackers Disease". Personaly, I would smoke a bowl before sitting down to do homework. Just one, or maybe not even a full one. Just enough to get you focused and on task. This isn't exactly a legal way of doing it, but small amonts of THC can actually help concentration. A risk with doing that is becomeing a pothead. If that's not a problem with you, go right ahead. I warn you however that the life of a hardcore pothead is not easy. I would recommend against become a full-blown pothead, but like i said, just a little bit could be just the help you're looking for. Be careful and good luck.

Hahaa, wait until your senior year and you'll see how lazy you can get. From personal experience, try to not sit around all day and watch tv, play game, talk on the phone or whatever that you do. If you slack off whenever you have time, you'll have that feeling "I'm bore and there's nothing to do," even though there's ton of things need to be done. The cure for this is to keep yourself busy with house works or anything that involve with relaxing.

Dear lazy,
Wow. The fact that you are so aware that you have a problem with procrastination, is a sign that you are definitely ready to change it! A huge problem with someone who puts off and puts off comes from thinking too much about whatever it is that you're putting off. If you put half the effort into doing what you need to do, that you do in thinking about it until it's almost too late, you would probably come up with awesome projects, and your grades would come up drastically. Baby steps honey, baby steps. The first thing to do is think about the project or work assignment for just a few minutes. Try to break it down into parts. For instance, if you have a project to complete, what do you need to do first? Perhaps gather the supplies together? So gather them together and take a small break. Think about the next thing you need to do. Research maybe? Give yourself 15-30 minutes for some research. Well, you get the picture. Do this until you finish your project. And don't forget to start the baby steps the first day it is assigned. The first time you do this, and actually complete a project or assignment on time and brilliantly done, it will get much easier the next time. Good Luck!
Linda
