Yea on your buddylist you go to set up the little Plus and Minus signs then click prefrences then on the side when it says catagorey click Away Messages and at the top it says When away...then you will see and option that says allow sending of messages check that one and it apply wait for it to load then hit ok

do u have 5.9 becaus on aim 5.9 if you press the eye it makes you look like you signed off on everyones list but you can still talk! if you dont have it and you really want to do this upgrade it!

keep going away and coming back, eventualy the yellow notepad will stick and it will look liek you are away. or you can directly conect, and sign off. youll still be able to talk

I wouldn't know because I don't have AIM but I think there is a way. You can talk through e-mails or phones. (hope i helped)
