No, it is not right. Squaring a number is multipling it by itself. You can look at it these ways:
4y is like saying 4 times y. So you do y times y. Then 4 times y. Then add the products together. The sum does not add up to 6 times y.
For the method above try inserting parenthesis (sp?). That would make it look like this (y*y) + (4*y).
OR
Look at it as there are for sets of y. Or for the y squared part it is y sets of y. So add y sets of y and 4 sets of y together. This does not equal 6 sets of y.
I hope I hepled! ♥ good luck
ask me any more math questions I understand this part of math very well! ]
no thats not right... y squared+ 4y = 6y is your problem. Bring the 4y over as a negative to the 6y side. That will give you y squared = 2y... get it? Well, im not sure if you do because this problem doesnt have a very clear solution. You could make things called 'restictions' but thats a long thing to explain and i dont feel like it. it doesn't it equals 4y + y2 (squared) ]
How about solving it now?
y^2 - 2y = 0
y^2 - 2y + 1 = 1
(y-1)^2 = 1
y-1 = + or - square-root-of(1)
y - 1 = -1
y = -2
OR
y - 1 = 1
y=0
y = {-2, 0} ]
