We all must burn our fat from wherever our body decides to take it from. Cardiovascular (aerobic) activity is what burns fat. You need to get your heart rate up a little for an extended period of time. Jogging, swimming, playing basketball, riding a bike, or anything of that sort will do it. Most sources suggest starting at 1/2 an hour 3 times a week. I suggest doing stretches for 10 min before and after to warm up and cool down.
Once you've burned fat, you may still wish to tone your stomach area to improve it's appearance. You may also wish to strengthen your abdominal muscles. If your goal is to look thinner from the front and back, you want to tone your obliques by doing twisting and bending exercises. If you want to flatten your stomach (it will never be completely flat if your a healthy woman, btw), you can do leg lifts of several varieties. The previous posters suggestion of holding your legs up just off the ground is a good one too.
As general advice, see if your local community college or gym/health-club offers a pilates course. As the previous columnist mentioned, it's an awesome way to improve your physique. :) [ dreamingkat's advice column | Ask dreamingkat A Question ]

nocturnalkid answered Tuesday March 8 2005, 7:41 pm: Hm. I think if you do crunches and sit ups, you'll build the muscle underneath the fat. You need to BURN the fat, which probably means a lot of cardio and stuff that will get your heart pumping. Now, I'm not sure how long it will take, but don't expect a three day miracle. If you try one of those crash diets, you'll lose like 10 pounds in 2 days, but you mostly lose water and you'll get that back eventually, so do try to avoid those. Just be persistent!
