Sick and tired of being sick and tired..

Question Posted Friday February 18 2005, 9:31 am

Ok so I have already gone to the doctor. I am taking medicine and a mulitvitamin. I am so tired. I don't even want to hear myself say it again. I am coughing up stuff, but it doesn't seem to me like it's getting any better. The worst thing is that I cannot sing.
It's mostly congestion. I have used cough drops, Nyquil, Vapor Rub. Took 3 baths last night trying to be able to breathe more clearly so I could sleep.
If I am not better by Monday, I am definitely calling the doctor again.
So has anyone got any bright ideas to how I can feel better?

try hydroxyzine which has a side effect of clearing up the sinuses, and try straight benadryl for better sleep. phenergan also has a sleep side effect. any drug that has antihistamne side effects or properties will make you drowsy and clear you up. there are also a few other prescription stregth drugs such as deconamine (decongestine) and claritin-d. get with your doctor about each!

Get off the multivitamin if you can and find a tonic. There are special tonics, like the Severn Seas one, that specifically help people who are feeling run down or ill :)
If you're having trouble singing, there is a special 'cough drop' for singers, my friend uses it...I can't remember the name right now, but I'll ask my friend when she comes online and email it to you if you leave an addy/column name when you rate.
Try Olbas Oil...that is damn strong stuff. It's like Vics VapourRub but much stronger. Oor put a couple of drops of tea tree oil into a bowl of hot water, put your head over the bowl and a towel over your head (to help trap the steam) and breathe it in (don't drink it though lol!!). Eat a little bit of chocolate, and if you're in a sunny part of the world, do some sunbathing - both of those help to release endorphins, the 'happy hormone'. If not, have all your curtains open to let as much natural light in as possible.
And finally, have a positive attitude!! I know it's hard, but tell yourself that you WILL get better very soon, and that there are people out there worse off than you. Watch some funny movies and chill! People with positive attitudes recover much more quickly than people with negative ones!
Blessed Be and I hope you get better soon!

A bad enough case of congestion is almost impossible to clear up, even with medication, which sucks :/

If you have Mono, some cases last a *long* time. I had a friend who had Mono for several months, so be prepared to deal with it.

I agree that Dayquil is better than Nyquil, usually I don't need much else...to help you stay awake and bring down any fever you may have, soak a cloth in cold water and wrap it around your neck, resoaking it whenever it loses the coldness; this always works wonders for headache and fever, although it does little for congestion.

Well, in my opinion, dayquil is much better than nyquil. What did the doctor say you have? I know exactly how you feel, the week before last I was sick with allergies and stuff, I didn't see the doctor I just used dayquil and nyquil (dayquil worked better for me) When my sister was sick she used the vapor rub stuff, she said it worked for her. This week I have one of the worse cases of strep/mono/whatever else I have, that the doctor has seen in a while (that's what the dr told me) I'm been taking stuff for it, but it doesn't really help either. Really all I've been eating is Ramen Noodle soups, (anything hot or spicey helps with stuffy noses) and I've been drinking lots of milk and chocolate milk (anything cold helps with sore throats) I'm probably not telling you anything new. Just maybe like eat stuff that's got or spicey to help with congestion. I used to be in chorus, and gosh now do I wish I remember what our teacher said to do when you were sick. Just try and get your rest. I haven't been to school this week except monday and tuesday, and we have today and the upcoming monday off, for me it's a 6-day weekend (though I'm sick so it's not as fun) but for everyone else it's a 4-day weekend. Though I have no idea why I'm saying this. It has nothing to do with your question haha. Try to focus on something else. Do you use any type of nose drops/sprays. I use flonase whenever my nose is stuffy/runny/ whatever else can happen to a nose. Sorry this isn't much help. But I hope you feel better soon. I hope I feel better soon too haha. Well I hope you get some answers that are much better than mine :-P. Later!!
