math I have a math test tomorrow and I really don't understand some of the stuff! We're doing subtraction of postive and negative integers. Some examples are:
3 - (-6)
40 - (-14)
17 - 15
Can anyone please give me the answers to these problems and tell me how you got that answer? PLEASE HELP ME!!! I'll rate 5's!!!

When you subtract a negative, it's just like adding a positive. A few years ago, my teacher told me to switch the signs when doing this. For example, 3-(-6) would be changed to 3+6; 40-(-14) would be changed to 40+14; and 17-(-15) would be changed to 17+15. Also, if you ever come across a problem like -7-12, that would be -7+(-12). All you have to do is switch the signs around and it will be easier for you to solve. Hope I helped :)

Here's an easier way to remember this.
What is a plus sign? It's two minus signs crossing each other, right?
So if you have two minus signs between numbers, those signs should be crossing each other; there should be an addition sign there instead. ]
I just took a test on this! For the subtraction problems you make the subtraction sign an addition sign and change the sign of the second number to its oppistie (ie: positve becomes negitive, negitive becomes positive). If you need any more help with this ask me. By the way imagine it as a number line. I hope I helped! ♥ good luck ]
When you see a problem like 3-(-6) if it's a negative number being subtracted by a postitive number, you switch both of the - signs and change it to + so in essensce, it would be 3+6 which equals 9. Same thing with 40- (-14) You change both of the - signs to a + one so it woul dbe 40+14=54. I think you made a type-o because 17-15... is 2. If you have it as 15-17 you can do this- Change the two numbers so that it would be 17-15. Whatever answer you get, in this case it would be 2, you put a negative sign in front of it! Hope this helped. ]
Its actually reallly simple!! If your subtracting a negative number, its like adding a positive!! ie 3-(-6) is the same as 3+6!! and another ie 8-8=8+ (-8)!!! ]
draw a temperature chart it will help you alot from expirence go from 0 to like + 20 and to - 20 so its easier to count intergers ]

subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive... the signs cancel each other out. ]
