Question Posted Thursday February 10 2005, 8:36 pm
I've been best friends with a girl named Kaitlin for over 11 years now and we're both 16 (I'm a girl too btw). Lately she's been so consumed with her social status that she doesn't even talk to me or even look at me anymore because I'm not "cool enough". We both play on the volleyball team and she really isn't a very good player, but she gets really jealous because I always play all the time and I got moved up to varsity this year while she didn't. I get the feeling that she talks behind my back because now the whole volleyball team hates me and I'm naturally a very quiet person so I don't know why they'd have any reason to dislike me. I don't have very many other friends. It's really hard for me to talk to other people, and I don't want to be friends with Kaitlin anymore. What do I do? And should I try to get revenge? (she also purposely ditches me at dances and stole my bf just to get me angry...)

Truthfully think about this, Her social status in which shes so consumed, may seem big right now, but think...when she leaves school and gets a job, on your resume you cant put, i was popular back in 10th grade. WHO CARES IF YOU WERE POPULAR. Social status gets you nowhere outside of shcool anyone stupid enough to get caught up in that fad is dumb. Now leave your friend, she stopped being your friend a while ago if she managed to do all this to you, try and meet new people, in class just casually say hi to someone, dont say anything conversation wise, unless something like, i dunno, itll pop up if you have to say something. If you say hi to someone gradually overtime they will say hi back and how are you, and from there a conversation will form and later a friendship. Anyways, dont worry bout revnge just dont be her friend, its revenge enough when she laeves school and finds out popularity is a non issue in real life. Something you have already been well aquainted with according to your story. [ shake's advice column | Ask shake A Question ]

Best of Luck!

Hope i helped!
