Question Posted Wednesday February 9 2005, 8:21 pm
at school, its sooo annoying! i am so good in every subject...EXCEPT american History. i study so hard but i just cant do it. i got a 65% on my last test and my highest is an 80...but i always get 50's and 60's on them. my friend doesnt even have to study and she gets 90s and 100s. what can help me study more and learn/remember the stuff?
They're a pain to make- and very time consuming, but it's worth it.
I get 3x5 notecards and cut them in half. Use fun colors- it makes it interesting, and you can organize by type of question, chapter, whatever.
As you're studying, make two piles. Ask yourself the question. If you can answer it without turning the card over to peek, put it in the "done" pile. If you have to peek, put it in the "do-over" pile. When you've gone through all your notecards, do the "do-over" pile again, repeating until all your cards make it into the "done" pile, or you're too sleepy and mind-wandering to continue.
Start studying early- don't wait until the night before the test! Go to your teacher for extra help- explain that you'd like to do better, ask for suggestions (what's going to be on the test, etc.) [ rainbowsend's advice column | Ask rainbowsend A Question ]

First of all, learn to be interested in the subject. Second, do whatever you can to really study actively not passively.
There are sites online that let's you study effectively. I myself have a class this semester that the professor's teaching way too different for me. The key ingredient to making the grade is to think the words, "IT'S EASY". Aside from that the interest...
Learn to figure out the professor's teaching style. If for example, the professor just like's to lecture without writing anything on the board then just jot down what he lectures in your notes. I'm sure you can learn one or two things about what comes out in the test basing from how he teaches.
Lastly, there are homework helpers online that you could use for free.
*tips for finding info from search engines:*
a) Google is a good website to start with. Type in (study habits, how to study, ways to study, or how to get good grades in school) there are just so many to look for online.
b) Askjeeves is another website you can try. Type (homework help, free online tutoring, homework helper, tutors).

Alot of history is pretty dry and boring, just names and dates to memorize. BUT some techniques may help you:
Make associations-when remembering great artists, think of the Ninja Turtles, associate with movies, music, or whatever works...even silly rhymes. (In 1492 Coumbus sailed the ocean blue)
If writing helps you remember, recopy your notes or retake notes at home while reading your book.
If your teacher allows, tape the class. Then listen again later with the notes you took and see if they still make sense.
If your teacher does a review befire tests, take TONS of notes! Study them, then study some more. Have somebody quiz you that will not make fun but will help.
And ask your friend how she remembers all that stuff...maybe she is a history whizz, or maybe she takes good notes.
If your history teacher is the approachable type, go there. Explain that you are trying but the connection is not there. Ask for help.

jokerzgrl answered Thursday February 10 2005, 11:07 am: What helps many people is to do an outline of the chapter. Its easy to read, and the columns going straight down make it easier to grasp. Also, don't try to cram stuff into your head all at once, that doesn't help at all, because when you get ready to take a test, your brain overloads, and you forget stuff. Don't stress over it too much.

babygrl101 answered Wednesday February 9 2005, 9:43 pm: why dont you get tutoring from your friend. and if you still dont get it, try making history interesting for you. it helps most of the time. history isn't boring if you try to make a little fun out of it. sometimes history can be interesting.
