dieting and gaining weight...

Question Posted Monday February 7 2005, 2:02 pm

I've heard that if you go on a diet that restricts food intake or doesn't have the right nutrition, that when you go back to normal eating, you will gain back all the weight PLUS more. The gaining back all the weight makes sense, but what is it that makes you gain more? Just curious.

When you diet, your body thinks that you are starving and stores food more. (This in on a cellular level and cells can't think). When you go back to your former bad habits, the body takes all the food you eat and stores like mad for the next "famine" so there you are heavier than before. Physiologically, the body doesn't know the difference between a diet and a famine.

it makes you gain more because of your metabolism it slowed down so whatever you eat you will gain it right back

Your metabolism slows down. Trust me, I know, I used to be anorexic, and I sure did gain back all the weight plus more :-( Lately I've been trying to lose it, good luck to me ;). But that's pretty much it, your metabolism gets used to you eating less, so it stays at that pace, and once it slows, I don't think your metabolism gets fastser, so it's just your stupid metabolism...
