ok well my family has a cactus and its about 3ft tall and we've had it for more than 14 years and it hasnt grown so it will take a long time to grow..and we barly water it because it stores water in it, so water it maybe every 3 weeks(we water it probably every 4week about a month and its still alive)and it need a lot of sun

You are not suppost to water them once a week like once every two weeks and you need special soil(it is a gravel type)so go to like home depot and they will help you out

Well, It probably has too much water. They can handle standing watering. So try watering it less.

You are watering them too much. Cacti only need to be watered abotu once every three weeks. In their natural habitat (the desert) there is alomost no rainfall, so cacti are "built" for storing water for long periods of time.

Or they might just be dying.

You can take them in to a local Botanic Garden or something, they usually have people there to answer questions like these.

Is it a true cactus or a christmas cactus? Well, I'll assume a cactus.

Cactus as you know are from the desert. They don't need that much water in the first place. It is recommended that in the summer (if they're indoors) you should give them water 2x a week. In the winter though, cacti are known to lie dormant (they don't actively grow), so you only need to water them once a week. They feed off the water that they store inside and over watering them can turn them into a mush like thing.

The window is fine esp if it's a sunny south or west facing window. Like humans, most of their "growing" happens at night.

Later,
Arun

Too much sun/water could kill a plant.
