ADD

Question Posted Tuesday January 25 2005, 11:19 pm

At first I didn't really understand what ADD was. When I read one of Mary-Kate's quotes in a magazine saying "They give me extra time taking tests because of my ADD". I thought to myself "it does take me a long time to take tests also..." So I researched it and I realized what ADD was. I do have a lot of the symptoms, such as not concentrating on the simplest things, it takes a long time for easy things to register (things that used to be easy to register, is now not so easy), I often lose interest in things I once did, and become inconsistent, but I also have difficulty adapting to change. I sometimes don't finish homework assignments because I don't feel like taking the challenge, and lastly, I'll start doing things without looking at directions and I think I know how to do it, when I really don't.... do I have ADD?

Also, I told some of my friends, and just because "they get bored in class and don't feel like listening to the teacher", they think they have ADD. I TRY to listen to my teacher, or follow along with stories in class, but 5 minutes later, I'm thinking about something TOTALLY different, and lately, that "something totally different" is ADD and whether I have it or not. I feel like I have no one else to tell. I've told all my friends and they say "oh yea, I have it too!!" And they'll start laughing (not at me, just with me...only I'm not laughing...). I feel like no one is taking it seriously because many people joke around about ADD, but what should I do now if I really think I have it? I've told my mom, but I don't think she believes me either...

Additional info, added Tuesday January 25 2005, 11:33 pm:
Also, if I find out I DO have it, what will happen school wise, like for tests, finals, etc. Usually, for tests and stuff, I feel extremely rushed, and who wouldn't if it takes awhile for things to register?

Since everyone jokes around about ADD all the time, how would I tell people (especially teachers) and how would they take me seriously??

you could just have other things on your mind cause i am like you and at one time i thought i did have ADD but when i realy thought about it i realized that i had alot of things on my mind like friends boys and the biggest thing was when i was getting out of school!!! but if you don't have anything else on your mind then go to the docter...and if you'r mother wont let you just tell her to bring you just to make you happy and then you will leave her alone about it after..because you never know and if you get bad grades in school that may be the reason

you may verywell have ADD... , over 45% of americans have it . you should go to your guidence counsler and she can refer you to a thyripist (sp) that can give you a test ... if you do have ADD you can get medicine for it . if your ADD is really a big problem you may get iep a specialized learning plan and they may give you extra time for tests . you dont have to tell anyone about it your teacher will recive a copy of the iep and you dont have to tell he teacher anything .

okay i know how you feel. i think i have add and like i looked it up once and i really did have a lot of the symptoms and stuff, but when i told my friends they were just all like yeah right i bet you do. and it got worse. when i told my parents they totally laughed in my face. its really hard in school and they think im just getting bad grades just becuase im lazy. THAT IS SO NOT TRUE! the only reason is i forget i have it and i leave it at school or i will do half and like you said not feel like takeing the challenge and whatnot, and on tests, i am usually the last one done and i totally blank out. so what i think you should do is like next time you go to the doctor for a checkup or whatnot, mention that you looked up add and you have some of the symptoms. then just try to have your doctor or even you talk to your parents and teachers becuase people have add and they do need help. good luck with everything!!

The best thing you can do it talk to your parents and go and see a qualified doctor.

He will be able to diagnose whether or not there is a problem and offer you support and help if you do have ADD.

As to what will happen school wise I don't think you should stress yourself out worrying about it til you find out whether there is something wrong or not!

If there is then there will be loads of adults able to help you.

Take care and let me know how it goes!

There is a lot of controversy on if ADD actually exists. USA doctors/psychiatrists use a criteria from the Diagnostic + Statistical Manual to figure out if a person has ADD, I have included the link to the criteria if you want to see for yourself. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) This is what any psychiatrist will use for treatment. However, in England their psychiatry society doesn't have this classification. The other controversy is are we overmedicating kids who have it.

You may have other things going on like some obsessive compulsive things going on, or it may be depression, which presents with a lot of similar characterisitics. However, if it is really affecting your schoolwork and social functioning- the best thing to do is to talk to you doctor about it. Your pediatrician (if you're under 18) will be able to determine if there is something going on and who you should see about it. Your mom will be more likely to listen to the doctor. Remember that you're old enough to ask to talk to the doctor by yourself, and you are protected by the doctor-patient confidentiality. Your doctor can't tell your mom anything you don't want her to know (I know that's a big issue with teenagers).

As for the time thing on tests- yes, once you do see a psychiatrist/psychologist (only psychiatrists can prescribe drugs) and they agree for the need, you can ask for special testing conditions (like no time limit) on standardized tests and other tests ( I know in college you can too).

I'm glad that you're with it enough to know that something may be wrong. Shows that you're very intune.

Sorry for the long answer. Best of luck. Drop a line if you have anymore questions.

the problem with self-diagnosis is that they almost always come out positive. sounds like you might have it though so i suggest gettng an official test froma doctor. not alot would happen to you school wise, you would most likely take the test at a seperate time so you can take as long as you need. all schools are differnt in that regard. i do know that thats how it would work for standerdized tests for sure. unless your school has a special add class (which i doubt) nothing about your day to day life would change
