ice-skating

Question Posted Thursday January 20 2005, 8:54 am

i skate and have just gotten to the part where you are required to lift your legs high up to the side . ( you stick your arms out so you are in a T-shape , and you lift your leg up so that one of your hands are holding your feet , while keeping the leg you are lifting straight ) i can't lift my leg high enough . does anyone know any excercises that can help this ?

Put your arms out to the side then do the splits keeping your legs parrallel to your arms and slowly.....and I do mean slowly lean forwards as far as you can.

If it hurts at any point stop and go back to normal.

This will make your hips more flexible.

Have fun!!

you could try holding your leg up in the air for long periods of time!

well i am a figure skater too and you must be talking about spirals. yea they suck major! i hate them but . just do splits and when you lift your leg on the ice and try and lift it higher make sure you dont lean too far forward or BOOM! you fall. keep your back arched and lift.

Try doing a scorpian-if you don't know what it is then nevermind-or you can try touching your feet to your head, it might sound hard but it's not. Or you can sit down and touch your hands to your toes.

If you do dance, then that helps alot, I know ice-sakting and ballet are kinda similiar so practice kicks etc or just ask your coach to help you with that. and just really stretch you legs out whenever you're at skating & if you practice splits, even if you can't do them at first, that might help. But if you don't do dance, I know something that really helps, it's a ballet move called grand bat ma(not sure about how to spell that one lol) you could probably find it online. Good luck!
