Well, I'm 14 and I'm in 9th grade. I think I'm failing 2 of my classes this year. My sister understood kinda she's 21. But, she told my mom 9th grade is the hardest grade. But My mom said shes going to take away my internet if I fail something this year, and then I'll be screwed. I'm in Algebra 1. And it's SO difficult, I have gotten an F on every test possible in that class, I just don't understand how to do anything, I've asked the teacher for help n stuff. But, he just always says. "maybe you should pay attention in class" but I do. I've told my mom a numerous amount of times. And she keeps telling me to bring my book home so she can teach me, but I know she won't know anything. And when I told her last night that I might be failing 2 things on my report card, she compared me to my 3 older brothers and sisters, and how they've never failed something, and she would be disapointed. And I just don't know what to say to her, it really hurts that she can't understand where I'm coming from. And I'm trying harder. How can I get her to understand where I'm coming from? Please help.

Meet with your teacher or another student after school to help you understand the concepts. [ lovelyrita's advice column | Ask lovelyrita A Question ]

Moop answered Saturday October 30 2004, 3:05 pm: transitions between schools are the hardest years. I will vouch for you there. But, there are things that you can and should do. For one, find the other algebra teachers and explain your problems to them. If you're in a lower-level class and don't get something that your teacher won't explain, nothing is stopping you from going to upper-level teachers. They can probably explain it easily to you and tutor you. If you're in upper-level classes then go talk lower-level teachers. Get second opinions on the material. My first algebra teacher taught us a horrible way to do something, and well, it was much easier and more efficient the way my second teacher taught it.
Does your teacher assign homework? If he doesn't you should assign yourself some of the problems with the answers listed in the back of the book as practice or buy one of those handy workbooks from teacher stores. I find it very disconcerting that you never bring your book home. How do you do homework?
Take notes in class. If you're not already, then by george, you MUST. Review these notes before tests.
I know how it is to be compared to older siblings. But it's backwards for me since I've learned from my older brother's mistakes and my parents think I'm going to make them, but I'm smarter than that. [ Moop's advice column | Ask Moop A Question ]
bubbleblodnie12 answered Saturday October 30 2004, 2:58 pm: i have a c right now in 1 class. I havent ever gone below a b-! i am trying my hardest to bring it up too. Just like you! The way to get her to understand it is to let her know your trying and tell her the basics. Your failing an important class. You need help... so get a tutor. Its that simple. Try it, if you still want you internet ability then you have to go the long way down the road. [ bubbleblodnie12's advice column | Ask bubbleblodnie12 A Question ]
