Question Posted Sunday August 22 2004, 9:49 pm

I get really bad migraines almost everyday. I've tried taking advil, bayer, exedrin migraine..almost every kind of aspirin, and nothing helps. My doctor doesn't want to prescribe something to me because I'm only 15. So my question is does anyone know of a way to relieve migraines? Not regular headaches but migraines..thanks

A friend of mine used to have prescription medication for her migraines when she was way younger than 15, but .. yeah. If the only way to get rid of them is getting a prescription, I'd try going to a different doctor and seeing if they'll prescribe you something.

I also suffer from migranes, I am 14. It is not normal to get migranes everyday, unless you have a brain condition. What I did is i went to see the nurologist(sp?) There are ones at local hospitals probually or ask your current physician. I went to go see this doctor, he prescribed me with a drug, (i dotn know the name)It is dissolvable and it works, there are many kinds of migrane medicines. Do go to a nurologist and talk to them, especially since your getting then every day. They may take a Cat Scan (a xray) to look for anything wrong with the brain( cancer, clots...). Remember, they specialize in this stuff. I hope everything works out.
Please rate:)

i get them too. for really bad ones i take T3(tylenol with codein) you do need a perscription but its not really a hard drug your doctor should agree to give it to you. if not then have your mom/dad talk to the doctor.

I get migraines too,and it is hard to get a doc to give you the meds for them because most of them are considered "controlled substances" and very strong drugs.I'm not sure of any other ways to help them, but to express to your doctor how severe they really are,and how much they hinder your daily activities. He may reffer you to a neurologist to run some tests and confirm that it's migraines you are suffering from.Once they determine for sure that it's migraines, the doc should be a little more willing to prescribe you the right meds!!Best of luck, let me know how you're doing!! :)

I started getting migraines when I was about 13 years old. The prescription meds didn't help. Most meds did about as much good as eating m&m's.

My first suggestion is really wierd, but I swear it works. (My grandmother told me about it.) Take a raw potato and slice it into several thick slices and put them on your forehead, and tie a bandana around your head to keep them in place.

Here are a few other suggestions that aren't as wierd.

Dampen a bandanna with some rubbing alcohol and tie it around your head.

Cool gel eye masks are great.

(My favorite) Two ice packs, place one on your forehead and one behind your neck.

It also helps to try to figure out what's causing the migraines. Certain foods can cause them, like things with nutrasweet. Also lack of sleep can trigger migraines. That's the main cause of my migraines.

Sorry so long, but I hope I've helped, and if you have any other questions feel free to drop them in my inbox.

There is good evidence that taking riboflavin supplements can help decrease the intensity and frequency of recurrence of migraine headaches.

I do understand why your doctor is hesitant to give you stronger migraine medicine. Your body will become more and more tollerant of those drugs over time, make them ineffective. By taking them at the age of 15, you run the risk of becoming resistant to these drugs early in life, making continued migraines difficult to deal with later on.

I would also make sure you've had your eyes checked recently, as strained eyesight can trigger severe headaches. Also, get your teeth checked, as cavities can actually cause severe headaches - both the eyesight and tooth bit can feel much like a migraine.

Also, when taking the more "normal" pain killing drugs, take some caffeine - drink a coke, whatever - this will help the drugs work better on your migraine.
