Periods

Question Posted Tuesday August 3 2004, 12:45 am

I am 17, and I have had my period for about 4 years now. It had been pretty regular for quite awhile, but recently it has been getting very irregular. For Example, I got my period on July 15th, and it only lasted for 3 days which is highly unusal for me. Then today, I got my period again, and its only the 2nd, and it is much more heavy than it usally is.
Is this possibly a sign that there is something wrong with me, and if so, does anyone have any idea of what it is? I was thinking of going to the gynocologist, but my mom said its normal, but I dont think it is, because I know what is normal for me. Also, What should I expect at my first gyno visit?

I think it's worth checking out with a gyno, if only to set your mind at ease. Gynos are experts - unlike your mom - and can be good to talk to. I would see if any of your friends have one they feel comfortable with; I'd also recommend a female doctor.

Before they examine you, you'll be asked questions about your period (take the date your last period started with you!), your sexual activities, etc.

The exam itself does not hurt, though it helps (physically and emotionally) if you relax as much as possible. The doctor will lubricate her hands or any instruments she uses. Usually, a doctor will take a pap smear, which involves holding your vagina open (it does not hurt, I promise), then swabbing at your cervix. This only takes a few seconds.

She might also put a finger or two inside of you and then press your tummy from the outside, just to check everything is working properly. It's important to ask questions as the exam goes along, or to let your doctor know you're a bit nervous.

Some exams end with a breast examination, some don't. Every doctor is different, and it's important that you find one you feel comfortable with.

if uve been on it for 4 years it should be normal... if uve been fooling around with guys and such it could be something.. so yeah i think u should see a gynocologist, n when u go there they open ur legs and look around and put something in there check ur boobs for lumps and stuff it might be really uncompfortable at the time but at least ur healthy.. tell me how it works out.

Well i have never been to the gyno..(thank god)..but i heard its just a bunch of pokin around. Dont worry about your period..there is nothing wrong with ya. Every girl gets irregular sometimes. I know people that only have 6-8 periods a year..and i know people that will get them 2 times a month. Though, if you do start skipping them, i suggest you go to a doctor to get checked out. :)

well if your sexually active... you may be pregnant. because you can get irregular periods at the beginning of your pregnancy. but if you're not then maybe you've been stressing out about something and its messing up your cycle. and at your 1st gyno visit, you should expect a pap-smear, which is when they scrape some mucus off of your cervix to test for cervical cancer. this can be painful. and you will probably get cultures, which is testing for stds. and you might get a blood test to test fro hiv. they will also probably examine your breast and show you how to give yourself a monthly breats examination to look for lumps.

hey..ok it could be normal..it depends on your body..i have a friend who gets her period no lie like once or twice a year..but then lucky me i can get my sometimes twice a month..i'm not an expert or anything but i don't think there's anything wrong & i don't know of any illness'/diseases/etc that could cause that.. your most likely ok but if it makes you feel better call and talk to your doctor about it. =)
hope i helped..xo`lexi..plz rate
