1. Always approach and dismount to the left if possible.
2. Meet your horse beforehand, if she seems crazy, don't feel odd to ask the rancher/leader for a different horse.
additional comment to the author of the post- I have ridden a heck of a lot more than twice. I just don't ride often, I have different passions. I HAVE ridden horses for a really long time, and a lot. And being that next week I will be entering my last year of horse camp (and I've gone several years) I do feel I have qualifications to answer horse-related questions. I also have friends who ride and work in stables. The above two comments were from a ride 2 years ago, my second ride, not neccesarily my LAST ride. I led a snow trail on my last ride at a winter camp for young children. END. [ Moop's advice column | Ask Moop A Question ]

Always keep your fingers closed tight on the reins!!! if you let a horse have to loose of a grip they will take off!! Always sit up straight and and keep your shoulders back with your heels down!!!! Just relax and enjoy the ride!!! And also know that yout trainers arent going to make you do anythign that would put you in danger so just do what they say and have fun!!! *~Joels_BaBi_GuRl~* answered Tuesday July 27 2004, 3:45 pm: make sure the horse knows ur the boss
make sure u have all ur safety precautions, like a helmet, and COMFORTABLE pants, u don't wanna ride wearing jeans(so uncomfortable)
just remember, if it's goin to fast, have him/her slow to a trot or walk, if ur unexperienced, don't start galloping
do walking, then a slow trot, then if ur REALLY ready, maybe a gallop
also be nice to the horse, don't use a whip, aand when u want them to go faster gently push their sides with ur heel, don't be harsh, otherwise u'll really hurt the horse
Ashley019 answered Tuesday July 27 2004, 3:15 pm: I have been riding for 9 years, have had MANY MANY spills off of horses and related incidents, so I can totally understand the nervousness part of horseback riding, you are on a 1000lb animal with a mind of its own :)
First of all, you should start taking lessons. Instructors will ease you into the whole riding experience and will take you slow in order to ensure that you know how to properly handle a situation if anything should go wrong.
You should also (if possible) try to get to know a certain horse. This helps a great deal to trust a horse and get confortable with it, as it will help you in the long run with any other horses.
If you were to fall off, the MOST (and i underline that!) inportant thing to do is make sure that you get right back on, no matter how scared you are. I have taken more spills off of horses then I can count( I enjoy riding crazy idiot horses :) and the longer it takes you to get back on that horse, the harder its going to be! I have seen many people leave the horse industry because of fear. Don't let it happen to you!
