what is this instrument?

Question Posted Friday April 30 2004, 1:20 pm

Hi, does anybody know what this instrument is?
Its a tiny guitar the size of a ukelele, but with a convex back and five strings. My whole family's puzzled, we don't know what it is!

It's called a mandolin.

without seeing it, I'd say it is a 5-string banjolele. They play like ukuleles but sound more like banjos. It might also be just a straight banjo.

MFS answered Friday April 30 2004, 3:41 pm:
one person has declared it a mandolin, even though mandolins usually have 4 or 8 strings...

I might guess a lute? Can you add to the post about what the headstock looks like? Or post a picture of it? At worst, can you send me a picture at sporkopolis2001@yahoo.com

If I can't identify it, I know at least 3 luthiers (guitar/string instrument makers) who can.

It's hard to say without seeing it. Do you have a picture we could see?
