Was this the right thing to do?!?

Question Posted Wednesday April 7 2004, 2:15 pm

There's a group of girls at my school who have been cutting themselves. I talked to my counseler and he said that it was the right thing to tell him, and he would have me remain anonomys. One of the girls and she found out from my counseler. She got mad at me, and she said that I should mind my own buisness. Was she right, or was that the right thing to do?!? Please help!!!!!!!!!

Lily

You did the right thing. No matter what anyone tells you. You may have saved her life! How horrible would it of been if she died because you didn't say anything? It took courage for you to do what you did and if it means anything, I am proud of you and in the end those girls will thank you.

I think that you did the right thing, but being a former cutter.. I guess I can also understand where that other girl is coming from..people that cut themselves can be defensive when someone tells on them or something, I guess it can just make them feel like..your judging them or something. But I look back on it now, and the people that told on me were the people that cared, and it changed my opinion about those people that did. It makes you look back on it and think, well..they most care somewhat about me to have tryed to do something about it.

Right now, the girls will tell you that you should of "minded your own buisness" , but later they will realize that you were trying to help . Later they might come up to you and say thankyou . What you did was the right thing to do,and you should be proud of yourself . Even if the girls don't come and tell you they will think about what you've done and how much you helped them because, first - cutting, and second is suicide attempts . Third if the person is really serious, they do commit suicide . You did the right thing so dipping in her buisness was the right thing to do . You should be proud .

Here-To-Help answered Friday April 9 2004, 4:15 pm:
IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO...
Cutting is a serious disease...
Usually it's for self-discipline, and NOT ALWAYS done for the purpose of TRYING to kill yourself..but...either way it's dangerous.
It's a disease...like, an alcoholic or something. Once you stop for good, and then you try it once again...it's hard to stop...
You know what I mean?
So...IT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO...(like I said before)...don't be nervous...they will eventually realize how much you helped them in the long-run; and, if they don't, then just forget about it.

hope this helped.

Self harming is a very serious problem, and generally not something people can come to terms with alone. This girl is probably going to hate you for a while, but you need to put up with that and remember that if you telling is getting these girls the help they need, then it's worth it. Who knows, they may even thank you in the end.

Yes, you did the right thing. Cutting can either be a suicide attempt, or a self mutilation thing, which is very different. Either way it isn't good for them, and even if they are mad at you, you still did the right thing.

But I would also keep in mind that the counselor didn't act very professionally by letting them know how he found out.

It was good of you to say something especially if someone is putting themselves in danger. It is to bad she found out it was you though. You were only tring to help her, and now she is mad at you. I would talk to your counsler again and ask him how exactly she found out when you told him in confidence. By law he has to keep your name anonomys.
