Question Posted Thursday March 18 2004, 2:50 am

I was just wondering if anyone knows what kind of grades I would need to get in order to get into a University College. Right now I have a 4.0 weighted grade but only because I'm taking honors classes. Does anyone know what kind of extra curricular activities I'm going to have to do in order to be able to make it into a UC?

Well, what kind of extracurricular activities are you interested in?

Pick the ones you like, because if it looks like you've signed up for a whole bunch of activities just for resume-padding, the admissions officers won't think well of you. Find something that you know you're good at, and really shine; or get involved in something totally new just for the challenge, and do everything you can to master it. It's especially impressive if you can achieve some sort of leadership position, because then it's obvious you take it seriously.

Colleges don't want you to be involved in extracurriculars just to fill your time: as a rule, they hope you're doing things that broaden you and make you a more interesting person. Also, your activities don't necessarily have to be school clubs: you might be studying music with an outside teacher, or running your own business, or something. As long as you can talk or write about it intelligently and explain why it's worthwhile to you, colleges will want to hear about it.

I'm not sure about in America, but I know that Universities in the UK look for just with good grade, but that are 'well rounded persons'. What that means is, they like to see prospective students with a couple of different extra curricular activities [ECA]. For example, maybe you take an art class, so your ECA might include the technical side of drama and somthing science-y. And vice versa, you take pure maths, you should try some form of art ECA or sport.

I hope that helps, and good luck getting into the Uni of your choice :)

It depends on your university... many aren't competitive at all and you'll be able to get in just fine.

Things to know:
1) Many universities don't look at weighted grades, they want to see what you got on the 4.0 scale. A 3.2 or better is important here.

2) One extracurricular activity isn't usually going to be a whole lot better than the others. Just get involved. Activities related to community service are probably best, if you have to choose.
