Question Posted Thursday December 18 2003, 1:26 am
How can I get people to stop overselling my talents? My supervisor's been calling me a borderline genius in public and I'm really not. Someone's going to give me a herculean task that I'm not up to and it's going to be all his fault.
That and I could swear I'm getting dirty looks from my co-workers.
How can I bring his public optimism level down? Screwing up in a big way is not an option.

It becomes hard for you to get through the day fearing that "the thing" that's going to destroy that light cast upon by others is just around the corner. Might I suggest that when someone does give you excessive accolades, try and share the spotlight with co-workers who may have helped in what "appears" to be the most minimal way. e.g., " Well thank you, but honestly...I couldn't have done such a job had it not been for ( insert name here)." Cast some of the praise elsewhere. I realized that there is no unknown law that says we have to shoulder all of the accolades ourselves ( and believe me, I've looked ). That will not only cast you as more of a mere mortal in the eyes of those that believe otherwise, but it, will also fend off some of those "leers" from your co-workers and show them that YOU don't believe all of the hype about you, either. My situation worked for me. Please let me know how it works for you.
Post Script:
Oh by the way, lol, I was labeled a genius, by both co-workers AND the shrinks that tested me, so imagine MY pressure, lol. You'll do fine. Or, shall I say...you'll do OK :) [ OneMan's advice column | Ask OneMan A Question ]

You might also speak up and point it to some of your coworkers who might help you doing your task. Such as "I couldn't do it without...." Or "Mrs. Blank really makes my job easier."
This happens a lot to me. Just give praise to your coworkers like your boss praises you. Plus this gives you a great opportunity to shine. [ chaos's advice column | Ask chaos A Question ]
Whatever answered Thursday December 18 2003, 4:20 pm: Are you actually serious? A lot of people would love to be in your shoes. If your supervisor thinks the world of you, you probably are a great worker. If you've been given extra tasks because of this then use this to your own advantage. Document all those extra tasks that was given to you and you can use that the next time you have your review or better yet ask for a raise! As for the dirty looks your co-workers been giving you, they're most likely jealous of you. Why not be more friendly with them so they could also see what a great person you are...but then agaain if this really bothers you, you should definitely confront your supervisor in a profffesion manner regarding this matter... Tell him he should probably ask someone else to do the job. Then talk to your co-workers about it and see if they understand.
