Q: does anyone have any tips for shopping at secondhand shops like what kind of neighborhood to aim for, etc?

in my experience, if you go to nicer, and by nicer i mean richer, upper-class neighborhoods, you can somtimes get like realllllly nice stuff. thats if you are heading to like the goodwill or salvation army store. but then there are used clothing stores, and even better, used clothing stores that are selective about what they take. just look in your area's yellow pages for "used-clothing stores" or "vintage stores." thats what i do! (and i consider myself an expert at thrifting, actually! hehe)
