in my experience, if you go to nicer, and by nicer i mean richer, upper-class neighborhoods, you can somtimes get like realllllly nice stuff. thats if you are heading to like the goodwill or salvation army store. but then there are used clothing stores, and even better, used clothing stores that are selective about what they take. just look in your area's yellow pages for "used-clothing stores" or "vintage stores." thats what i do! (and i consider myself an expert at thrifting, actually! hehe) ]
I mean there is no specific area to aim for. They have thrift stores for all sorts of things in all kinds of neighborhoods. For instance, they have several salvation armies in the neighborhoods that i have been in. They also have places that sell clothes that are really high fashion, that have been worn once or a few times and are in good condition, that instead of selling for 5 or 10 dollars, they sell for 75 or 100. So I would just google or yahoo thrift stores in your neighborhood. I think it would help too if you edited your question to mention what neighborhood you live in so that people can help you better. there may be someone on here that lives near you. :) Peace ]
