My dream has always and will always be to go to Stanford. I am a freshman, and so far have only one semister done. For my first semister, I got A's in all my classes. I am taking Honors English, Adv. Theater, Japanese I, Earth Systems, P.E., Computer Tech, and Geometry. For extra-curriculars I was on Shakespeare Team, and I am currently on Debate and Drama Team. I am also the secretary for the Drama Club. I am going to pick my classes soon, and I would like some advice on what kind of classes a college like Stanford would be looking for. I would also like to know any information on how to get in. I know I'm only a freshman, but I am definately going to college and Stanford is the only one I want to go to.
Hey!! I want to go to an awesome school like that too!!! And I'm definitely applying for Stanford. Okay, what I've heard so far (from guidance counselors at my school)....is that colleges like that look for:
-Extra science classes other than the required ones.
-Extra math. For example, at my school, you're only required to take math up to Algebra 3, but for a college like Stanford, you'd need to take harder stuff like Advanced Algebra/Trig., Pre Calc., AP Stat.... (....Yeah I know. Pain in the butt, buy hey. Ya' gotta' do what ya' gotta' do.)
-More than two years of a foreign language.
-Extra history and English/literature classes don't hurt either.
*Mainly, I think what I'm trying to say is that you need EXTRA, EXTRA, EXTRA stuff that'll make you stand out from other students applying for Stanford.
**Also, if at all possible, try honors or AP classes rather than on-level or informal classes. BUT, don't be in an honors/AP class for a subject that you're not good at. Like...Let's say you're bad at math. You'd want to take the "extra" classes that I was talking about before, but stay in an on-level class rather than honors, if that makes sense.
Just try to get the best grades possible in all your classes, and if you think you can still pull an A or a B in honors, then do it. If not, don't. Just try to avoid getting C's. And if you get a B, make sure it's in an honors class, not on level.
***Keep that GPA as high as possible.
****Keep up the extracurricular stuff, and do community service.
It sounds like you're on the right track so far, especially since you're only a freshman. Keep up the good work! You can do it!
-Oh, and as far as how to apply and stuff, talk to your guidance counselor at school. They'll explain everything you need to know about transcripts, resumes, all that good stuff...
