Q: do you think it's possible for a person to COMPLETELY change who they are?
No. Our personality is pretty much there forever. We just build up on it as we age. This is why they say that people who tortured insects as children may grow up to be extremely violent.

There's always conditioning, but those are just learned behaviors and habits. (Classical conditioning deals more with reflexes and unconscious actions to a stimulus; operant conditioning deals with learning from consequences of an event) They can't really change who you ARE.

Some people think that personality is completely detached from our anatomy, but it's really .. pretty much just your brain. The only way to COMPLETELY change who you are is to mess with certain areas of the brain. The classical example is that of Phineas Gage; guy gets impaled by a pole, damaging a section of his brain, and he becomes a different person.

Each section of the brain deals with some part of us. Take it out and it changes us. Mess with the occipital lobe, lose your vision. Mess with a part of the sensory cortex, you may lose feeling in a part of your body. But this applies to personality, as well. If you damage the frontal lobe, you'll lose the ability to plan and foresee consequences to your actions, which will cause you to be more impulsive (If you're familiar with Freud, this is kind of like kissing your Superego goodbye). If you mess with the amygdala, you may lose the ability to read faces / display emotions/etc.

Long story short, you can't just make a conscious choice to change. You can give up habits (smoking, drinking, etc) and addictions, but this may be extremely difficult. But you can't change WHO you are. Unless, of course, you get brain damage.

Q: Is it easier to get prego when you have sex and your on your period? Or is it the same?
Your best chances are to have sex around the time you ovulate. About 10-14 days before your period, I think.

Q: Hi, I have oral herpes and was wondering if it is possible to spread it to my partner with a cut on my lip from biting it. I am not having a outbreak right now, just wondering it its possible to spread it to them through the cut.
Yes, you can definitely spread it.

Unless my health teacher was full of shit, there is no real difference between Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 - just location on your body. So don't just refrain from kissing your partner.

Q: some cultures say women are completely usless and should have litterally no rights that a man has. in my experience i call this totally wrong, and im pretty feminist for a guy. like on tv everyone important, or in the picture is men, men men men men men. it makes me sick. so what do u think??
I think it's pretty ridiculous.

I'm female, so obviously I wouldn't be AGAINST rights. But it's kind of mind-numbing to think about the fact that having a penis can make you superior to another human being.

And then there's the whole 'fag'/'gay' insult. If a guy has ANY feminine traits, he's labeled a fag. You show emotions, you must be gay. Only chicks can show emotions. Sigh. In fact, a shitload of insults out there ONLY apply to women. The double standard is insane.

If a woman has a lot of sex, she's a WHORE. If a guy has a lot of sex, he's MANLY. He can get chicks. He's a WINNER.

And women are still underpaid.

But even from birth, we're treated differently. Boys get blue rooms & clothes, girls get pink stuff. Parents buy their sons trains and cars; they buy dolls for their daughters. AND POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. Parent sees son playing with a doll, they react negatively. If they see their son playing with a toy car, they react more positively. Kids pick up on this and follow what is "acceptable".

I mean, men and women ARE different. Aside from the obvious anatomical differences, there's differences in frontal lobe size (part of the brain to do with planning and self-control) and stuff like that. We're designed to act differently. But I don't think that that means that one sex is better than another. We're just DIFFERENT.

Is equality too much to ask for? I guess so. The only thing we can do is suck it up. Shit like this has been around for thousands of years and it's not about to change now.

To summarize: yes, it sucks. Yes, it's not fair. But that's just how society shaped it. I think mankind can't be at ease unless there is a gender, race, etc. to pick on.

There's .. ONE place I can think of that's the total opposite of this. The name escaped me, but it's an island civilization in which the women are in charge and looked up to.

Sorry for ranting.

Q: im 15/f.
And i had sex maybe 3-4 days after my period. It was not protected, and he came in me. He didnt pull out fast, but, he did pull out. I have been feeling sick. Its been a week today since we had sex. And i cant take an acurate pregnancy test tell the 23rd. Is there a good chance im pregnant?
thanks in advance.
When you have unprotected sex, there is ALWAYS a chance.

In a perfect world, women would ovulate about 14 days into their cycle and menstruate from day 23-28. Your greatest chance of pregnancy is sex around the time you ovulate. And lowest chance should be about Day 1 - 10, after your period. Because the egg is gone, and you can't fertilize what's not there.

However, your body doesn't always adhere to this calendar. You don't ALWAYS ovulate/menstruate on such a perfect schedule (especially if you're stressed). But yes. There is a chance you're pregnant.

Why you haven't used a morning after pill is beyond me.

Q: Hi,i'm a 14 year old girl and my best friends boyfriend loves me and i love him! Help Me!
Sigh. Alright.

1) You may get pissed off about this, but honestly, you don't LOVE him. Teenagers don't REALLY know what love is (dont' believe that Twilight shit. it's not REAL). I don't even think I've truly experienced it yet. You may like him. You may think he's attractive. But love is more than that. It's a commitment and a compromise, above all. And it's knowing that your partner is someone you're going to want to be with 2 days from now, six months from now, 20 years from now. Obviously, you can't know this for sure. How can you? You're really only a kid, you don't know where your life's headed yet,so you can't decide on who to spend your future with. In the next 10 years, your plans, goals, and interests can and will change dramatically. And chances are that in 10 years, this guy you claim to 'love' will no longer fit into that picture.

2) This is your BEST FRIEND. There's kind of an unwritten law most people with a conscience follow... you DO NOT date your friend's boyfriend. Doing so may get you a not-so-lovely reputation.

3) How can you be so sure that, even if you do end up together, he won't start "loving" another girl? It happened with you and him, it can happen again.

Think about this. REALLY THINK. Be mature. Would you really want to hurt your friend? Is it really WORTH IT? As you get older, guys will come and go, but your friends will always be there for you. Trust me, there WILL be other guys. I know right now it may seem like he's your soul mate and you'll never "love" again, but you will. You're young. You have your whole life ahead of you. Stay out of your friend's relationship and find someone else.

Q: I tried to fake sick but my mum checked my temreture and stayed there while i had the fing in my gob. my tempreture was in the 30's.

what is the blow dryer thing and how do you do it?

how do i get a high tempreture when my mum is checking my tempreture and she is watching?
Just tell her you have a really bad headache. Or stomach pains. Not everything comes with a fever.

Q: Okay im truning 16 on august 3rd and i have never ever had my first kiss.nore have i dated anyone.i have opened my options to girls too.so im bisexual and still havent dated anyone or had my first kiss.is that something to be ashamed of?
Jesus Christ.

No, it is NOTHING to be ashamed of. Although it may seem like it, you can't put a date on relationships, can't assign a "DO _____ by age ___" type thing or you will just screw yourself over. Don't rush yourself into something JUST because you haven't done it yet and everyone else is. The only reason it even seems important to do is the media; according to the media, sex/partying/kissing/making out/etc is something EVERYONE does. So if you don't, you're not cool, you don't fit in, etc. DON'T BUY INTO THIS. This is a load of horseshit.

Just wait until you get a boyfriend/girlfriend, someone you actually LIKE and want to go out with. And then you'll get your long-awaited first kiss. And it'll actually be special.

However, I honestly don't know why girls make such a big deal out of the first kiss in the first place. I mean, true, it may be something you'll remember in the future since it's the FIRST, but it's really not a big deal. For me (I was 17), it just happened. And then it was over. The end. My world didn't change. I didn't become a cooler, different person. So why worry about it?

==EDIT ==
People make fun of you over this? UGH teenagers. Hopefully, they'll grow out of that.

It's best to just ignore them. Don't let the stupid shit they say pressure you. I've been there, and it's NOT that bad. Yes, you may be left out of several dating/kissing/etc conversations, you may have to take shit about it from some idiots, but in the long run, you win. Really.

Q: Hi There..

I'm just wondering, I know that if a girl hasn't had sex before she's married then she's able to wear a white dress and if she has had sex before marriage she is able to wear an off white dress..

Is it up to the individual girl as to whether she wears a white dress even if she has had sex before marriage? Or is it the 'rules' that she is to wear an off white dress if she's had sex before hand?

Thank you :D
This isn't a rule. You can't just tell people what to wear, especially on a day this important. People get married in all kinds of attire, regardless of their age, sex, "purity", etc.

Besides, even if that WERE the rules, how the hell would they even know / enforce that?

Q: My boyfriend is turning 21 on sunday. I can not think of a single thing to get for him. ive even asked him and he says he doesnt want anything...im really desperate for some ideas. ive already looked for concert tickets & sports game tickets & theres no thing really that he would be interested in...he has a nice watch..im really just drawing a blank...please help!
If he doesn't want anyTHING, just spend time together. Either go out and do something exciting (like something CRAZY exciting, new for both of you.) or stay in and watch a movie, chill together, etc.

Q: i missed my period took a pregnancy test came back negative what should i do
There are many reasons for a missed period:

> stress
> sickness
> not eating enough
etc.

Reasons for a negative pregnancy test:
> you are not pregnant.
> you took the test too early (i think you're supposed to wait at least a week)
> something wrong with the test (rare.)

If you're extremely worried, try another test a couple of days from now or see a doctor. But if you had sex recently and (properly) used protection, it just may be stress getting to you. My period was a week late one time for this very reason.

Q: My man says if I love him I will give him head, what should I do
...And if he loves you, he'll wait until you're ready.

Don't let him pressure you into doing something out of "love". Both of you have to want this to happen. Both of you have to be ready. If you're not ready and he's making claims like "oh, that means you don't love me", he's just a horny teenager and a selfish jerk.

Q: alright everybody so I want to be emo but I don't really know which stores to shop at! Is there a list of stores or something where emo people shop?

Thank you for helping me change my style!
hot topic.

Q: Hey everybody quick question. Is it normal to love 3 different types of music equally? and to dress in three different categories?. For an example i listen to really heavy metal, club music like house euro jumpstyle etc... and i also listen to rap. and i dress like all those at different times during the week etc... depending on where im going. i love all 3 types of music but is this normal?
Don't worry, it's perfectly normal. Don't listen to the media; just because they dictate that you can only like ONE genre and have to fit in with that genre's stereotypes, that doesn't mean you have to listen.

For example, I LOVE Eminem (rap), Metallica (heavy metal), Fall Out Boy (pop rock), and Yiruma (classical piano).

So no, you're allowed to like whatever music you like and dress however you like to dress. It's YOUR style and it's YOUR personality. It's what makes people unique and interesting.

Q: Can everybody tell me something about Junior graduation dresses? My eighth-grade graduation is coming up and I don't know what to do. I went to my older sister's graduation from high school and a graduation party seemed kind of fancy because of all the pretty dresses the girls were wearing.

Are things the same for a Junior graduation? I don't want to buy a dress this way fancier than the rest of the girls have but I don't want to look stupid either if I don't get one that is fancy enough you know what I mean?

Can anyone please tell me what their experiences were like? Thank you a bunch!
Figure out what's happening after your graduation. If there's a party, wear a nice dress. If not, it doesn't really matter.

My junior high graduation was just ... a graduation. We sat through speeches and got our diplomas. And then we went home. Some girls wore nice dresses; I just wore a skirt and a T-Shirt. It didn't really matter because we were wearing the gowns the whole time.

Q: So I just got my period and I don't mean this month I mean for the first time ever and I am worried that something is wrong with me the blood isn't really red it's more of a brown color. Should I be worried about this? If not then what do brown periods mean? Sorry if I sound stupid but this is all kind of new to me, my mom ran away with another man so I can't ask her and I am really too embarrassed to ask my dad. Thanks.
It means the blood's been in your body longer.

Q: I have a question for anyone that might know, preferably somebody who knows from experience. How much does it cost to get an ambulance to come pick you up? Will the people who run the ambulance be able to help me or do they need to take me to the hospital? I guess overall what I really need to know just in case it is how much does an ambulance ride cost? Does it vary or is there pretty much a set price? I have been having some problems but I don't know if I can afford to go. Can anybody help me?
I'm pretty sure it varies. But it can financially destroy you if you don't have health insurance.

My sister got taken to the hospital by ambulance a couple of months ago. A month later, they sent us a bill that pretty much said, "If you don't have insurance, you owe us $550". Same goes for Emergency Rooms. They help you first and send a monstrous bill later.

Q: For starters I'm a 17 year old female and i'm going to Europe in June with my friends for our senior trip.

I'm trying to figure out what i should wear over there. Our trip consists of England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and then a cruise around the Pompeii island.

I know that i'm going to want to wear comfortable clothes because of all the walking around i'm going to be doing, but do you have any specific ideas of what i should wear?

I just bought a cute sundress and jean jacket from american eagle, but i have no idea what else to buy and what kind of shoes to get either!

Please help!
Thank you! :)
Italy can be HOT. I don't know where in Italy you'll be, but if you're going to Rome (which I'm going to assume that you are, since it's Tourist Central), pack a lot of very comfortable clothes that you can wear in extremely hot weather. You will do a lot of walking there because the Roman Metro only consists of two train lines: the A and the B. Sunblock is a must.

(Also, if you're in Rome, see if you can check out the Santa Maria della Concezione church. It's decorated with BONES. Extremely creepy shit.)

If you're going to Venice...also bring the above. Both Venice and Pompeii's temperatures stay around the 80s in the summer, I believe. But it does get pretty hot. Also, in Venice, the only method of transportation is a) boats. or the boat bus. and b) your feet.

Italy's the only country I've been to on your list, so that's about all the advice I can give you. But you should bring at least one sweater + t-shirt + pair of jeans just in case it gets cold. (And it probably WILL be cold on the plane / the airport.)

Also, Europe isn't as humid as the US is. Keep that in mind.

Q: I'm a junior in high school and this year I am taking two AP courses. :(
I'm tired all the time and don't have much time for anything but school.
And one of the courses (US History) is so hard that most of the time lately I just give up and won't do the homework. I'll just sit in my room and cry. I've been in the course since September obviously, and I slipped a little back in November but only down to a C-, and I managed to get it up to a C+.

But now this time I've dug myself into such a deep hole that I don't know how I'm ever going to crawl out of it.

The AP exam is in May, it's March. I'm currently failing the course. I seriously have like a 48%.

I've never failed anything. Before this year, I'd never even gotten below a B+ on a report card.

Please help! My parents are going to kill me, and besides that I'm so ashamed and disgusted with myself. If I don't bring my score up, it'll go on my report card and then colleges will see it and just ugh it's not going to be good. :( I'm so upset right now.

I need advice on how to get myself motivated again, and then like possible study tips you can think of. :(
I've been in your shoes. I took AP Euro History and that class DESTROYED me. History is a bitch of a class, and the AP exam will attack you with ridiculously detailed questions.

I had a 95 average at the time, but when I started taking euro tests, I FAILED them. That was the first time I've failed tests in my life. I honestly don't know what the hell happened, but I'm guessing it's cause
1) history doesn't interest me much
2) 20 pages of reading a night was a lot. I didn't do it not because I couldn't, but because I convinced myself that it was too much work. I didn't even try.

I didn't start TRYING until around April. Way too late to actually learn enough for the AP. So don't follow my example. Start studying NOW.

First of all, if you intend to take the AP exam, you need a review book and you need it fast. Take the diagnostic at the beginning of the book.

Second, go to tutoring if your school offers it. Grab a study buddy. Read from your textbook and your review book every day.

For the AP exam, I would recommend going to a barnes&noble or library to study. Just pace yourself; take your time reading the passages, stop and thinka bout what you've read. This REALLY helped me. Take the review quizzes at the end of the chapters. Also, write outlines. I've found that when I make outlines and have to actually spend time writing out the material instead of just reading it, it stays in my head longer.

Read from your textbook every day. And make outlines of the chapters. I know, outlines SUCK. They're tedious and boring and time-consuming. But trust me. They really help. Talk to your classmates abotu what you're learning. Ask them to quiz you. Don't be ashamed of getting questions wrong (for some reason, when you get a question wrong, it STAYS with you forever).

As for your motivation?
1) College. Since you actually CARE so much about failing, I'm assuming you care about your future, as well. And colleges will not appreciate you getting a 48 average.
2) Bribe yourself! Or get a friend to bribe you. This may encourage you to study more and know more.

Also, RELAX. The semester isn't over yet; you have plenty of time to get back on your feet. Never overwhelm yourself with studying. When you do homework, get off of facebook, aim, or whatever, and focus on your work for ONE hour. When that hour's up, walk around, go back on facebook, whatever, for 15-20 minutes. Just take a short break. Then get back to work. Keep up this hour of work / 15 min break cycle until your work is finished.

And, last but not least, give me your email and I'll send you an outline on US history that covers from the colonies to ~1900. This may not be TOO helpful; I did not take AP US history so many important details may have been left out. However, it MIGHT help a little?

Good luck!

Q: I am a US citizen and my fiancee is not. We are planning on having our baby outside of the US. I had read online that for the baby to obtain US citizenship I will have had to live in the US a minimum of five years, with two of those years being over the age of 14. Well, I lived in the US until I was 15 and 11 months exactly. So therefore, I have the five years, but lived there only 1 and 11 months after I turned 14. Do you think this one measly month will matter? And if it does, what is my next option (I want my child to be a US citizen, but am not planning on living in the states again). I know this is a really specific question, but thanks alot if you can help me.
I think you should just wait it out until your child is born here.

Why?

They probably WILL make a big deal out of that one month. The immigration people are extremely picky about what they want. They will not even accept a photograph if it is not exactly how they want it.

Second of all, getting your citizenship is a pain in the ass. My mom was a US citizen and I wasn't, and since I was under 18, I didn't have to take the test. We waited for HOURS. And then they walked me through a set of ridiculously annoying personal questions (father's middle name? father's birthday? mother's maiden name?), sign a crapload of documents, etc. And I'm pretty sure you have to wait a LONG time to actually get an appointment, too. This is a BIG hassle.

And if your child is over 18 when he or she applies for citizenship, there's taht stupid test to take. And if you don't plan on living in America, answering those questions may be a problem.

The easiest way is to just give birth to the child here. If US citizenship is THAT important, you should wait it out until the child is born here instead of having to put off the issue.
