Q: 14/f

im trying to loose weight, or just eat healthier. i gave up sweets for lent and i don't drink pop (when i do its diet but i never do) and i don't eat alot of junk food (basically none, not like chips and mcdonalds etc). i know fats are good, but what are they? i know theres saturated fats and unsaturated, which ones should i look out for?
There are different kinds of fat and different effects of those kinds of fat. Some are beneficial and some are not. Fats are in a lot of food, french fries, fast food, meat, cheese, butter, cake, etc.
Fat acts as an insulator, during the winter or very cold time of year- it keeps you warm so you won't freeze. It protects the vital organs so if you fall down the stairs and you have enough fat on your body- you would not break as much bones as you would if you were skinny. It is stored energy and a component of hormones that help store and transport vitamins.
There are two types of fat- saturated and unsaturated. Saturated is solid at room temperature (so you can actually touch it and hold onto it) and it is found in animal meat. Unsaturated is liquid at room temperature and is found in plants. Of course, they both are types of fat but saturated is unhealthy because it can clog up your ateries- which leads to high blood pressure and heart problems.
Fats are processed by the liver- the liver turns fat into glycogen so your body can use. If you eat too much fatty goods it can damage your liver and if your liver is damaged badly- you will die because without the liver your body will poison itself.

Q: would you wear a cami over a shirt? is that in style? thanks!
It is possible to wear a cami over shirt. However I don't like that kind of style so I do wear it like that. I've seen people wear tops like that. However, I am not an expert in fashion so I can't really say. :D.

Q: A few days ago I had a hard fall outside. I was wearing shorts and now I have some bad cuts/scrapes and wounds on my shin. They're not bad enough I have to go to the hospital or anything. But they're really ugly and now I can't wear skirts/shorts because it looks icky. What things can I do to make it heal really fast? Anything in particular?
When you first got the scrape, you washed the area with rubbing alchol right? If you didn't, you should because it kills the bacteria that may form in the area since it is opened. Cover the area with a bandage but occassionally remove it and let it breath for a while (take off the bandage at night.) Because if you don't- the wound won't heal (as fast) because with the bandage on- there is moisture and a scab can't form since there is moisture. A bandage will only protect the wound from getting infected but it will make the wound become harder to heal. So remove the bandage at night and let your skin breath so the scab can form.

The scab is something that forms to protect the injuried skin. Underneath the scab- new skin cells are forming. The scab will eventually fall off when your new layer of skin is complete.

Q: I have a toothache, only when I chew on the tooth. If i press on a certain part of the tooth, it hurts. I've come to the conclusion that I have a cavity forming. Is there any way to treat it before it turns into something big? I despise the dentist.
There really isn't anything you can do about it besides going to the dentist. (xD I hate the dentist too, when he turns the light on you- it just freaks me out) Go visit the dentist but before your visit try avoiding any additional damage to your tooth such as eating candy or sweetened drinks. If you have to- remember to rinse and brush your teeth.

Q: i woke up this morning with a stiff neck and it hurts really bad. i cant move but head to the left at all or it kills. what can i do to help this!? i need all the help i can get, thanks.
If you didn't injury your neck before it is probably okay. Nothing to worry about. It usually goes away in a couple of days.

I think it is mainly due to when you sleep, you slept the wrong way. That is why your neck is stiff because the muscles and tendons there are strained. It is just like when you work out and put excessive pressure on your legs and arms- the next day they'll feel sore. But in this case- you neck is tired out from being in the wrong position through the entire night.

Q: Okay so sometimes every once in a while I get these pains in my wrist. And it switches back and forth to each wrist. And it gets to the point where I cant bend it without EXTREME pain so I have to wear a write brace. I know I should go to the doctor but at the moment it isnt possible.
Does anyone know what it could be that is causing this ?
Please help :]
We can't really say unless we are doctors and we are able to look at your wrist but I think you might have a hairline fracture or sprained wrist. The hairlike fracture might just be a thin crack line in your bone and of course you can't see it. Best to get an xray. If it is not possible just try placing an ice pack on it- compress it- rest- and elevate the area when it really hurts. Like the previous user said- it might just be arthritis, however get an xray just to make sure. You don't want it to have a closed fracture or anything.

Q: i had my head slam into a desk...don't ask and now i have this big knot right between my neck and the line of my head.anyone know how to get it less swolen/red/sore! it hurts so bad i can barley move my head back!!!
it needs to go away in a couple of days! lol thanks though!
My best suggestion is go see the doctor right away. Injuries around the neck is not a funny thing and it has to be taken very seriously.

Sure the pain and reddness might go away in a couple of days if you apply ice or take medicine, but that doesn't mean you are completely healed. It might come back in a couple of years and you'll be in bigger trouble.

Go see the doctor and get a xray if you consider the injury really bad. See if any bones are mislocated (which I doubt because you'll see it.) You're probably not going to be paralyzed (though I can't say because I am not a doctor) but it is best to make sure.

Q: what does it mean for something to be on "two sides of the same coin"
It means something is that appears to be different is actually similar or identical.

On common quarters (I'm using USA coin for example) there is the head of a president and the text "Liberty", on the reverse side there is the eage and the text "Unite States of America". It is true that both sides are different and have dissimilar icons and text- they both have the same function. They act as a symbol of the USA on the quarter and their cost is 25 cents.

So when that quote is said- it means that someone or something that may seem different from others are actually alike.

Two people that come from different background and different race may be the "two sides of the same coin" because they are going through the same situation and experiencing the same difficulties. Appearance doesn't judge the character, personalities does.

Q: 14/f

my usualy daily meals are for

breakfast 7;30 am- cereal (wheates or cheerios) maybe some fruit

lunch 12:45 am- sandwitch, fruits, carrots, some wheat thins or crackers

snack 3:30 pm (aferschool): wheat thins or some snack (no junk food)

dinner: depends? usually a meal

then before bed: sandwitch or small bowl of cereal

is this too much or just enough? i am trying to loose some lbs and mostly just be healthy. i dont eat junk food really and no candy for lent. i also run for 20 minutes a day. what else can i do or am i fine?
Well, to loose weight- you can't only not eat junk food. Even if you eat healthy it won't help your body if you don' exercise. Running is good for you, so stick with that. Besides running you should do some other exercise to strengthen your body and keep it in shape.

It doesn't matter what you eat, you can eat your favorite foods but eat it moderately and eat much less of it. For example, just because you are trying to be healthy you give up your favorite chocolate chip cookies. No. Being healthy doesn't mean you have to give up your favorite foods. You can eat it occassionally and if you do- just control the amount you eat.

Also, if you want snacks sure- it just have to be three hours after your previous meal. Every meal and snack should have a three hour difference. And, I advise you not to eat before bed time. You should not eat two hours before you sleep because the food does not have time to digest and when you sleep- you aren't burning the calories off- so it all turns to fat, fat, and fat.

Make sure to eat lots of water- keeps the body hydrated, fresh and healthy.

Q: i've been trying to eat a healthy lunch to help lose some weight. This is what I ussauly bring.
~1 banana
~light yogurt
~ 1-2 pb&j sandwiches OR a small sub with
cheese, no fat mayo, and green olives
~fruit juice of some sort
~ and sometimes I'll buy a lil bag a pretzels

Am I right the right track to being healthier and skinnier? If not what should I fix.
If you want to know some times on eating healthy- read the book "Dorm Room Diet", though it is a book that was written for college students- we all can read it since it tells you the basic food groups and types of foods that should be eaten, foods that should be eaten moderatly, and foods that should be eaten occassionally. It really helps because it tells you if you are going to a restaurant, you are advise to eat a piece of fruit before leaving because it will help you not be so hungry and what you should order if you really have to.

For me, I don't like the school lunches I have, so instead I pack a sandwich that consists of:
-two slices of whole wheat bread (whole wheat is a lot better than white bread because it is a lot healthier, and since bread is a starch- eating whole wheat reduces that much starch intake)
-two slices of ham/turkey breast
-a slice of cheese (so it won't be so empty with just ham/turkey
-a leaf of lettuce (washed cleanly of course)
-baby carrot sticks/ celery sticks/ if I really wanted to I'll pack some sticks of pretzels
-water

Sometimes when I am in a hurry, I won't pack myself a sandwich and would simply grab a bar of Trail Mix or a cereal bar. It keeps me in until I get home.

Q: how come people who want to lose weight drink like, 5-6 bottles of water a day?
Weight is mostly due to the amount of water in your body. To lose weight- you will need to lose the water first. (Losing fat is a different issue) I would think that people who drink large amounts of water, it would make them urinate more often and also addition water in their system will come out with it. At the same time, it helps clean out our body's system making it more healthier.

Q: i'm 125lbs
i'm 13
i'm 5'2
i've been told i'm average weight, i've been told i'm slightly underweight, & i've been told i'm morbidly obese
and i've been told i'm just plain fat
i don't think my appearence is fat.. but..
is this a healthy weight?
I think you are fine considering that you are 5'2 and the same height as me. I am 112lbs but from the book I read, women that are 5'2 and range from 110 to 125 are average weight. However, of course, if you lean towrads 120- that is kind of risky and if you range downwards it is more safe. But if you are really concerned about, do some exercise- not just to lose weight but to keep the body fit and in shape. The area I am in, it is pretty cold, so I usually do indoors exercise such as early morning stretches, push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, wall sit ups, etc. When you do exercise, don't keep in mind that you are trying to loose weight- keep in mind that you are trying to be healthy and keeping your body in good shape.

Maybe read the book "Dorm Room Diet", I loved that book and it helped me a lot. Even though it is for college students, it still helps people who aren't in college. It suggests you all the food you should eat, foods that you should eat less of and exercise that you can do. (That part about the exercise I am a bit uncertain, though I am about 95% sure, maybe I am confusing it with another book.)

Q: Okay, so I'm 15 and I'm only 5'3 I'm like the 5th shortest kid in my grade. Some kids who are in lower grades than me are taller! I drink milk like 3 times a day and I sleep like crazy and yet I'm still short- how can I get tall?
Well, you can't really put pressure on height growth. It is your genes that moderate your height. Some people are tall and some people are not. If your genes are short genes, the highest you might grow to will be 5'4 or 5'5, but if you do enough exercise (such as stretching, pull-ups, jump rope) it will help you grow up to 5'6 rather than 5'4. However, it is not always possible because you might have recessive tall genes. Where as your short genes are dominant. If your parents (either one) are short, it might have been the cause of your height.

The kids in other grades, they probably have dominant tall genes and recessive short genes. It all matters on the genetic material.

However, maybe you just haven't reached your growth sprout yet. I am only a freshman in high school and I am only 5'2.

Q: Okay, so when you get cuts you get scarring. Not those bumpy ones but like a darker skin color in the place of the cut [does that make sense?] Like there won't be a cut but in place of it, the skin color there is darker. But anywhos, I was wondering why that happens and if it will ever go away.

It depends on what kind of cut. For example, a paper cut won't neccessary leave a scar behind. It'll heal in a couple of days. But if you get a deep cut with a knife, that's different. The cut will definitely bleed and after a few days a scab will form or the skin will start to close up. If it is bad enough, it'll leave behind a scar.

If you pick at scabs, it will also lead to scars. Minor cuts will go away. More severe ones will heal but it will leave behind scars.

Q: Im afraid of getting braces cause my friend got them and they hurt for 3 days (I get really scared pretty easily). Im gettin them soon. Do they hurt wen u get them on? What happens if you lose a tooth while they're in? What happens if a tooth growns in while you hav them in? Please help......im scared.
I just got my braces a few days ago. On Saturday and it is true that they do hurt. However, when the orthodonist glues them on and places the wire through them- it doesn't hurt. The pain occurs later in the day or the next day.

If you lose a tooth- I am guessing you still have your baby teeth? Because if you already have your matured teeth, you shouldn't be losing any tooth. Certain teeth in your mouth (after you get braces) may feel loose but it is common and they will stop feeling loose after a couple of weeks.

If a tooth does grow in when you have on your braces, you should check with the orthodonist. Usually areas that don't have a tooth in place, the orthodonist doesn't put braces there so if the tooth does grow- it grows on its own with nothing to block it.

Hihi everyone. Call me Kit and I live in New York. If you ever want to talk, just leave me a message!

I'm a sophomore in High School. Of course, I am not a superb advice giver but I can have my voice heard in topics. However, like everyone else, I have my own problems. But I feel that if everyone can just express their true feelings to one another, problems can be solved easily. So if you ever have a question or a remark to make, simply say it. I don't mind at all. I'm sure even if you make insults at me, you probably have a reason to and I'll just approach it the same way I approach things in life.

Whether your question is simple or profound, I'll do my best to help. ^^. Laters!

Kit.
