advice
I know we really aren't supposed to ask homework questions but I really need help. I have Algebra finals next week and I do NOT understand how to do these types of problems: Factor- 2x - x + 4, x - 81, and 4x - 13x - 30 = 0. Whenever I ask my algebra teacher all he says is: "HOW CAN YOU NOT GET IT????" and then he just explains it the same way all over again and I still don't get it. I'm already at a C- in his class and I'm normally an A - B and nothing lower student so this is bad. I really need help. If I don't pass this exam I could fail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Factoring is simple. The problem with most people and factoring is that there are a billion ways to do it and many don't understand those that others look upon as simple. Assuming you're in high school, there should be many many algebra teachers (and even higher math teachers). Go to as many as you can before finals and ask them about factoring. You'll get a billion different ways to do it. I didn't learn the first time I was taught but the second worked. The method I use now makes factoring very very fast which is how I need to factor. Find one method that suits you and if you'd like the method I use I might be able to make a word document about it given proper time.
Okay, this may sound really stupid, but I'm serious about asking this question. I'm a girl, I'm thirteen, weigh 105 pounds and I'm 5 foot seven. I'm so tall, and I HATE it! I wish I could stop growing! No offense to tall females, but I think that tall isn't really that flattering for me. My mom is always complimenting me on how tall I am, and I hate it so much! I don't want to be tall! She won't even let me drink coffee to stunt my growth! My doctor said that I might even grow to six feet! I don't want to be that tall! I hate my height already! I'd be happy to be 5 foot four! ARGHH please, is there anything I could do to 'appear shorter' or to stop growing??
if it's just guys that give you problems, then hush up about it because they all gain height in a year or so anyway (assuming you're around 13-15). Until then, you probably don't need to be dating and if you do then you can just laugh with your datee about your height. Barring all that, I was 5'7 in sixth grade. Now at 15, I'm 5'9 1/2. It does slow down. Now, the only down-side I see to being tall is that I have huge man-feet and unless I absolutely have to I can't wear women's shoes. At 13 in females, feet should have stopped growing (unless you have scoliosis like I did) and unless you wear size 10s or 11s, you shouldn't grow to six feet. And it's neat to be really tall, you get to sneak into places because people equate height with age. I've not done it but there was a lady at my school last year who thought I was a senior (as a freshman). Embrace your height for those shorter than you will want it and it's silly to want to be short like them. Unproductive.
hey..i am someone who is very unhappy. i cant explain why..because i dont know why. i cant talk to my parents. my parents are fakes. in public theyre great..at home theyre horrible. im in a counselor group at school..and that is the only time of day that makes me happy..when i can talk to someone. i seriously feel like friggin shooting myself sometimes. wtf do i do.
with your counselor group in school, do you ever tell them about your family problems? If you express that it's truly as terrible as it affects you then the adult leader(s) or whatnot of the counselor group should tell your parents something and they should try to remedy the situation. In addition to that, everyone is a "fake" at some point. If you look at the psychology of Carl Jung he says that everyone has a shadow bag which is pure creative energy that society represses. If we didn't have personas (the brain's compromise between the shadow bag and society), everything will fall to pieces in the world between those who were "fakes" and those who restrain themselves too much. If you've ever seen Fight Club, it's a good illustration of all of it.
My family believes very strongly about lots of things. One of those things is legal marajuana. They think if somebody in the USA wants to smoke pot, let them. Pretty much everybody in my family smokes pot except for me. I'm 15 years old. I think they're wrong. I don't think pot should be legal because it makes people do stupid things. But so does beer and other alchaholic drinks. But they're legal. So I think maybe they should not allow alchahol or pot. I'd like to point this out to my family but I don't want lectures. What should I do?
---
firstly, you're a good kid for having your own opinions and not just flushing with your family. Now, if you want to express these opinions to your family members you should find a time when everyone's together and no one's angry. Then just ask them to hear you out on your ideas and offer to hear their's as well even if you have had them beaten over you. You could also wait until the next time you're all together and someone decides to smoke. Say something like, "I'd prefer it if you didn't light up around me" then explain your case from there. Just make sure you're well-researched and they should listen.
when the slop of a line is 12/0 (12 over 0) is is 0 or undefined? when the zeros on the top is it 0 or undefined?
it's 0 when the numerator is 0 because the denominator doesn't matter in those cases. when it's in the bottom it's undefined because it would be a point, not a line.
My mother is forcing me to join a gym of some sort, and she wants me to join "weight watchers".. I was wondering if any one knew like what you do at these meeting things. Thanks :)
Weight Watchers is a decent program. It follows the food square developed by Robert Baskin (the son of the man who created Baskin Robbins; ironically he went on to preach against fattening foods). My mom is on the weight watchers plan and I eat what she eats. Since she's been on it (about 6 months) I've gone from a size 16 to a size 10. If I can do that not following any particular program (when I did swimming I didn't lose weight; when I was a vegetarian I lost little weight), then weight watchers is something that will make you feel better about yourself. The meetings are basically sound like chatty women's gatherings that I totally abhor. If I was on the actual program I would most likely stop going to them because it's just not me. As for joining a gym, I would suggest excersize on your own first, just to get in the habit. I bike (in good weather) around 40 minutes a day, three days a week.
Hey everyone. I’m doing studyquestions for my Biology Final & Algebra, which is going to be REALLY hard. I was wondering if anyone can help me with some questions. I rate good. Thanks! =)
C2. What is the name of the element most commonly found in the four macromolecules?
C3. What is the function of a nucleic acid called DNA?
C4. Identify the monomers of each of the four macromolecules.
C5. What are the two types of nucleic acids?
C7. Give on example of a monosaccharide and three examples of polysaccharides.
K1. Identify the roles of cell division in reproduction, growth and repair.
K4. Compare meiosis to mitosis.
K5. Explain the difference in meiosis of males and females.
& Algerbra ::
7. Write the equation of a line whose intercepts are >> (x intercept = 2) (y intercept = -3)
9. Find the xintercept of y=2x-7
23. The sum of three consecutive odd integers is at least 58. Dind the smallest 3 integers for which this is true.
Ok, thanks soo much! =) I’ll give you 5’s for any help!
so technically you're not allowed to ask homework help questions, but since it's finals I thought I could give some studying advice.
First, it helps to make index cards early on then revise them onto other cards (if you're allowed to make them as cheat cards). Secondly, get a good rest the night before. Thirdly, have most of your studying done before the day before then review with your friends every day for the next day's finals.
Alrighty I just finished doing Weight Watchers (woohoo) and I lost all the weight I want to lose...now I just don't want to put back on any of the weight I lost! THAT would suck...so does anyone know how to maintain your weight? I have 20 points a day (about 1600 calories)...anyone know what to do on Weight Watchers to maintain your weight
My mom is on weight watchers. When she finishes her loss she's becoming a life-time member meaning that she will go to meetings once a month and generally eat all her points and such. If you go to meetings (and you should) they'll tell you exactly what to do and help you get back on track if you do put weight back on. Congrats on your weight loss.
Hey, I would like to know if you all can tell what is wrong with my finger and if I should go to the doctor. Wednesday night, I was at gymnastics messing around, and as I went for a back tuck, my middle finger jammed into my leg... then about 3 minutes later, I jammed it again into a panel mat (a hard mat in case you dont know) same finger and everything. My coach didnt care because i shouldnt have been messing around, so I went through the rest of practice ignoring the pain. Its now 2 days later, and im getting shooting pains throughout it, my whole finger is about 1 1/2 the size of the other, and my knuckle in the middle of my finger is twice the size of the other and i cant feel from there down to the end of it. I have it taped together for now, but it hurts to even write, im typing this without it. Im sorry its long, but i cant decide if I should go to the docot Monday and get x-rays jus to make surem or relax and let it heal on its own because of an expierience with shoulda been broken foot since i didnt go to the doctor right away. Today, I had to call home for some medicine to help with the pain. So, what do you all think of this situation (any of you who read this)...?
In this case, you can actually get your coach in serious trouble. And I would consider switching coaches if it's possible. The same thing happened to me in PE, almost. Anyway, go to the doctor. He/she will probably order X-rays and most likely you'll get a splint to wear. The farther you let it go now, the longer you'll have to wear it. And don't let it slide for a few days/hours. It's annoyingly painful, but it happens to the best of good. Heal fast.
ok, so my geometry teacher resigned right before exams and she said she would do anything to help me pass. But guess wat. i didnt. i fail the semester and the exam. I am screwed. i am not gonna be able to get in to a college with my grades. and my PSAT scores SUCKED ASS. I need help PLEASE!!!!
CALM DOWN... What grade are you in? If you're a freshman-junior you can make it up, maybe even in the summer at a community college. Secondly, PSAT scores mean nothing if you don't need to get a National Merit Scholarship. Then, some colleges (such as VERY liberal arts colleges, private and expensive) don't even look at grades or class rank or any of that. So calm calm calm down. Work your hardest these next [however many years of high school you have left] years. Pursue what you want and do all the work and study for tests. You can get through this.
Hey guys! I'll try to make thise short.. okay, so I want to go to this high school in Aurora, IL and I am from Springfield. It's called Illinois Math and Science Academy. My parents don't care or anything but they say that I can't go to Florida with my youth group or Puerto Rico with my friend Erin over the summer if I want to go to this high school. It's a 3-year school and it would mean I skip 9th grade, but I would also get to study many cool subjects like astronomy. Which should I pick and why should I pick it? i rate high. Thanks in advance! ~Brit
Here's the low-down on IMSA (I know about 6 sophomores and 3 juniors and 1 senior at IMSA, my school has the highest rate of sending freshman in the state). You do not skip 9th grade, you get it in somewhere else. My best friend is at IMSA, last year she was in school with me. Secondly, it's tough. It's the toughest thing ever. It's so ridiculously tough that it's only one above the school I'm at now in Illinois for being tough, but it does prepare you for college. If I recall correctly, there is one high school in Springfield. I also know people there and IMSA would be good for anyone not wanting to deal with all the crap I hear my Springfield friends deal with. I suggest that if you really want IMSA, you get into SHS then take advanced math classes (college algebra/algebra 2 and geometry simultaneously) and then test into IMSA. That would mean the SAT 1 and 2 and the ACT. AND you need to score really really well. Go ahead and go to Florida and Puerto Rico because it doesn't matter for this year. Just make sure that as a freshman you work your hardest. Get ONLY As and Bs. Then test into IMSA. more information can be found at www.imsa.edu .
how can/ can you know the y-intercept when the equation is in slope intercept form? y2-y1=m(x2-x1)
thanks.
if you have two points, plug them into the equation. Say your first point is (2,-3) and your second is (3,-1). Your equation would be (-1)-(-3)=m(3)-(2). Then you would get 2=m(1) so m (slope) = 2. Then you plug 2 into the m slot in y=mx+b (slope-intercept form) and end up with y=2x+b. From here you'd choose one of your above points and plug it in again (-3=2(2)+b). Then you simply solve for b as the y-intercept.
how do you calculate a grade point average? thanks.
most of it depends on the system your school uses. Some schools have weighted GPAs (which are for nothing but vanity since colleges just unweight them to rank you with other applicants anyway). At my school we use the system mentioned prior in this thread. Go to your counselor who can total it according to your school's rules.
hi,
one of my dreams has been to become a singer but my parents say that if i dont sing in like a talent show at my school then they wont sign me up for anything.. the talent show passed and i didnt try out because i had something else planned for the date that they made the talent show.. ok so ALL my friends tell me that im an amazing singer and stuff ( i dont want to sound concided ) but i dont think im terrible ! any ways.. how can i get my parents to let me go to auditions and signups and stuff.. what can i do to follow this dream ? .. thanks in advance- i rate! :-)
love, singingmyheartout
[ sorry about the length ]
Let's put things this way, in the average high school 1 out of 5 girls can sing well (boys are a different story, it's much much less). If every girl attempts to be a singer or study vocal music in college, millions of girls in the US would be fighting for hundreds of positions. It's almost like sports. This is not to say that some don't make it, but it's very very very hard. Get a side life and a side passion to study. If you pursue vocal music with all your talent and get ABSOLUTELY NOWHERE you'll have something to fall back on. My advice for pursuing? First, get into high school chorus. Secondly, if you had to "hang with your friends" or something of that nature on the date of the talent show, give up now because you apparently have higher priorities above singing. Thirdly, sing. Right now. If you're not singing then you're not going to be singing when someone really asks you to sing. If you immediately thought, "oh gosh, I don't know what to sing..." then don't pursue vocal music. Do something else. Finally, from my choir director, "A good singer sings, a great singer can sing at the drop of a hat." (and also, conceited is spelled conceited, not concided. Think about saying "concided" for a moment.)
ahem: a note, perhaps you should have signed up for english instead of "peer counceling."
Finals are coming up and im in 9th grade.. Is it really hard? And how much is it worth like points like. How much does it count on your grade? What happans if you have a D and C for both semesters.. and you get a F on your final. would you get it averaged out between the 3 grades?
don't worry too much. If your 9th grade finals are anything like mine were, it shouldn't be too bad.
Usually final scores (for the semester) are calculated like this: Each quarter PERCENT grade is worth 2, so add them together and multiply by two; a final is worth 1 so if you added that to the first two then divided by 5 you would essentially get your final semester percent. For instance, let's say I had a 70% in history first quarter, then a 72% second quarter and got a 67% on the final. I would have earned 351 points towards my final grade. When you divide 351 by 5 you end with 70.2%. So my grade would appear as a C, but barely. But if I got a 65% on the final, I would have a D for the semester. Finals only make a huge difference if you're at the border between grades.
Don't worry too much, it makes it worse. Fill out your notecards (if allowed on the multiple choice formats) and study what you can't fit. Review everything and find a person or two to review with. Also, someone older than you can give pointers, especially if he/she was in the class in a previous year.
See, I think I have OCD, and it really bugs me. It's starting to interfere with alot of things. Like when I pray at night, I feel the need to repeat some lines several times, and I always have to have my TV remote facing a certain way exactly, and all this other stuff, it's really bugging me, I have talked to my parents about it before but they don't really seem to get how much it interferes with my life, because most of the stuff I do is behind their back, like rearranging stuff and whatnot...
What I want to know is do any of you have OCD and what are some of your symptoms (if you feel comfortable sharing)? And where did you go to get tested for it, if you're undergoing treatment what kind and is it helping? Thanks so much if you help, I will rate if it's good advice!
Thx
my old biology teacher had really really bad OCD. In his room, everything was labeled and the board was always clean. He cleaned his board with soapy water and a sponge (which he cleaned after cleaning the board) after every mark he put on it. Every mark was also done with a ruler unless it was written, then it was in caps. I don't think he really realizes what he's been doing which is the worst sort of OCD.
Generally, it's not something that's disruptive or bad. I would embrace your OCDness. Everyone's a little OCD. I use plastic bags and tupperware in my lunch box so things don't get crushed and I don't have to wash the tupperware. So I wouldn't worry too much if I were you.
I'm contemplating having the bariatric surgery done. I'm 140lbs over my "ideal" weight... and the diabetes and other probs are too much to deal with for the next 10 years. I've been this same size plus or minus 20 lbs for longer than that...and I have hated being heavy... now we have insurance that will cover it!! I think I need to do it... Just wanted to see where you stand on the issue... and see if you're supportive of the idea.
Your best bet is to ask your physician where he/she stands on it, not an online advice site. He/she will probably suggest diets first because it's the healthiest way. But if you've tried dieting and just can't keep the weight off, the surgery is probably best.
how in the world can i get rid of red marks on my face from old blemishes? i have the most sensitive skin in the world and any type of blemish leaves a red scar-how do i get rid of them???
Aveeno makes a variety of products with oatmeal that help calm sensitive skin like yours. This way you wouldn't get any more blemishes and your others would have a chance to heal up. Also, don't use heavy make-ups and face creams to cover up the blemishes. It dries out your skin and then the scars won't heal over.
My sister has an acount on here and she is only ten years old. I was watching her on the computer one time and i saw that there were many unappropriate questions for a child her age. Don't you agree? I have been trying to get her to stop giving advice because most of the time she doesnt know what the person is asking and she doesnt know what she is talking about. She is naive because she has not had the life experiences needed... she is only ten. Her user name is 'lifegivesyoulemons' if you see her on here please tell her that this site is inappropriate and tell her that she should not be coming on here anymore. Thank you. It is greatly appreciated. I am only doing this because i care about her. If you have any ideas how i can get her off this site please tell me. Our internet doesnt come with filters or anything like that so we need a different way to keep her off of unappropriate sites.
Thanx.
thank you for noticing this, next time you should write an abuse report as children until 13 should not have columns. I'll ban her temporarily and reccommend a longer ban. Thanks!
HI,
Ive got a book jammed down the back of the radiator and I need to get it out. I can't get it out the bottom or side of the radiator, only the top. I can't fit my arm through the top to get it. How on earth do I get it????
Zoinatrobe
the most important thing not to do at this point would be turn the radiator on. I repeat, DO NOT TURN THE RADIATOR ON. Because well, if you turn it on the book's going to burn, then the wall, etc. How did the book get there, anyway? Oh well, I would try the salad tongs method or get help from an adult.
