Can a 5'5" grown adult sleep comfortably on a full bed?

If all you intend to do is sleep alone in that bed then a twin is fine. As an adult though you may wish to invite a significant other or just a friend to join you for some adult fun. In which case a twin will suffice but a queen allows for much more room to have fun.

It depends on you. I prefer queen beds because then you have more room to move around. Plus, if you ever feel like getting romantic... a full/twin is usually not enough.
