There are two types of women when it comes to how they orgasm. There are those that orgasm vaginally and those that orgasm clitorally. Generally speaking it is the clitoral women that wants hard and fast stroking during sex so that her clitoris is stimulated which doesn't happen as well with slow loving strokes.
If your a guy it is not hard to find out if your girl is clitoral or vaginal. Start by fingering her vaginally only. Stay away from her clit. If she does not reach orgasm, is not wet or is just not into what your doing. Then stimulate her clitoris with gentle strokes. If her vagina starts to get wet she is a clitoral women.
A little advice; most women know if the are vaginal or clitoral. If you know each other well enough to jump into bed together be a gentleman and ask her is she is vaginal or clitoral. Sex is like everything else the partners need to communicate with each other.
For sex to be great then you need to communicate your likes and dislikes. The sex must be consensual between two adults. If one says no to something it is no, end of conversation on that subject.

I second the response from dragonflymagic completely! About your specifc question, perhaps there could be two aspects to it:
There is the physiological part where in, with hard and rapid strokes, the stimulus to the inner sensitive walls of vagina is more frequent and intense, resulting in enhanced pleasure to women.
Then there is a spiritual and psychological side to it as well. Not all but I guess most sensual sensitive/sensual women appreciate the masculine domination of a male counterpart. The domination takes them to a higher sense of consciousness from the union (yin and yang), willingly motivating the female to completely wanting to surrender herself to the man. This surrender is beyond the physical bodies and ego, results in the true union of masculine and feminine energies into the divine third energy. The surrendering applies to the male as well when the woman want to be the dominant one.

Every person is different. Each female has a certain way of reaching orgasm that isn't exactly the same as the next woman. What you can do is get your hands on book, you tube videos and other media on the web to learn more about how a female body works and their differences from men. Generally females take longer to warm up, like an iron, but once you have them at orgasm point, they can keep having them if they can stand the intensity. Then once they're all hot, it takes a long time for them to cool back down. A guy has orgasm quicker and then its over for him. Thats just one example.
Think about it, not all guys stroke themselves exactly the same way to get to cum if masturbating so to ask why a woman needs hard strokes is like asking why people need silverware to eat. We may hold our forks differently, not use knives at all, etc.
