Pregnant?

Question Posted Thursday April 16 2015, 12:16 am

I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend about two months ago. When it was time for my period to come a few weeks later, it was a day late and not as heavy as it usually was. But I didn't worry about it because I still had a period. Keep in mind I am on birth control. I don't take it at the same time everyday but I do take it everyday. So now it's month #2, time for Mother Nature. I am two days late and have barely spotted. Could this mean that I am pregnant or does this sometimes happen? I have been on the pill for 5 years now and my menstrual cycle is always like clockwork. Please someone advise me on what could be going on. Thank you in advance!

The chances of you being pregnant is unlikely, especially since you 1) got your period last month, and 2) are on the pill. Since you take it at different times every day - I'm guilty of that as well - your hormones may be fluctuating enough that you've been spotting, and that your period has been thrown off.

Are you on the combination pill (like Ortho-Cyclen, or Ortho Cyclen Lo), or are you on a progestin-only pill (sometimes called the mini-pill)? Combination pills are more flexible in when you can take them during the day without being at risk, whereas progestin-only pills MUST be taken every day at the same time. I believe most people take combination pills, but if you're unsure you may want to look up the pill you are taking.

That being said, even on combination pills you can throw your cycle off by not taking them at the same time every day, so I'd recommend setting an alarm on your phone. I really do think that the change in your cycle and spotting and such is a side effect of taking the pill at different times every day.

If you miss your period altogether or you only experience super light spotting, I'd recommend getting a home pregnancy test. Birth control IS highly effective though, so try not to worry so much - I know it's hard!

I've read that its important to take the pill basically same time each day, not one in the morning, another day in the evening or afternoon. I 'can't say why Drs recommend that but I've read that it is very important. Someone passed on this helpful hint to stay on time, put a timer on your cell phone to go off same time each day and take it them. And since most of us always has a cell phone on them, it works great.
What was mentioned about stress is true. That said, if after 5 years of no irregularties in being on the pill you begin to get these issues consistantly and you're pretty sure its not stress, then its time to go see the Dr. and get a different prescription. As humans, our bodies go through change and growth cycles so basically every 7 years we have regenerated our cells but also can have a major change like losing an allergy or getting one we never had before. Happened to me. As unlikely as it may be, it still could be a reason why after so much time you all of a sudden are not regular. Since worrying will make a period even more delayed, take a pregnancy test anytime you're wondering so you can relax again and think about talking to your Drs office and mentioning what's going on.
Good luck.

I don't think your pregnant. Stress over if you could be pregnant will affect your menstrual cycle. In fact more women miss periods over stress than actually being pregnant. Any type of stress can cause a women to miss a period. Being sick, taking antibiotics or even some over the counter medications can throw of a woman's menstrual cycle.

I suggest you do the following mostly to help yourself relax, not that I think you are pregnant. Purchase a reliable home test kit. Ask the pharmacist which one they think is the best or most reliable. Then go home and follow the instructions. If by chance it is positive wait 10 days and test again. False positive are more prone than false negatives.

As for taking your birth control medication. It should be taken every day at the same time. Maybe not at the same clock hour but at the same time each day such as when you get up or when you finish breakfast.

I suffer from a chronic condition which requires medication be taken each day. If I tried to take it by the clock it would be impossible so I take it at breakfast, lunch after dinner and before bed. This has worked fine for me and is well within the window of the medication schedule. Try and do the same with your birth control. I suggest you take it in the morning with breakfast as it is the easiest time of day to remember.

I really do not think your pregnant that stress is the problem so try to relax.
