Think Pittguy has it nailed. There is no 'normal'. Cross-dressing is essentially harmless, and entirely victimless. It covers a wide spectrum too. If a guy has a female partner and likes to dress as a woman in private, is it more normal than a guy who embraces the whole issue of self-feminisation and cross dresses in public? If he enjoys relationships with men is it less normal than a guy who doesn't? Are there 'degrees of strangeness' in crossdressing? Is it all normal, or all strange? Is a younger guy doing it more strange than an older guy? Just who exactly is the arbiter of normality anyway?? Me? Pittguy? The mysterious and anonymous 'voice of the public'? It's almost impossible to even find any discursive (argument from premise to conclusion) framework. It is entirely subjective.

One thing we as a collective society across the world really need to think about is how we use the word "normal." After all, what is normal?

For example, while it is normally considered rude to belch in American culture, it is normally considered a compliment to the chef in others.

The same goes for the term strange. One person's strange can be another person's normal. As another example here, many people might think it is strange is someone does not drink alcohol. However, some cultures and societies think partaking in a beer is out of the norm.

From a psychological perspective, this would probably be something that is considered to be along the spectrum of many things that are considered normal.

All in all, the important thing is that we understand that we not all the same like cookies form a cookie cutter or candies from a mold. Our differences are what make us unique and so long as they are not hurting anyone, we should respect, and if so inclined, celebrate them.

I cannot say for certain why anyone does anything. What I will say is most likely people who cross dress receive some sort of comfort in doing so or for other reasons. Among those other reasons would be someone who is transgender. Someone who is transgender needs to cross dress to feel comfortable in their bodies while they wait to make the change to the opposite gender.

People who are transgender are not abnormal in the sense that something is wrong with them mentally. Transgender are no different than Gays or Lesbians in that they are an accident of birth born into the wrong body. Males in a female body and females in a male body.

Just like Gays and Lesbians this is not something they woke up one morning a decided they wanted. IT was in their DNA at birth and most have struggled or fought with the problems of this all through childhood and into their adult lives.

So to answer your question I do not think it strange for someone of either sex to cross dress. They do so for their own reasons mostly because they feel more comfortable in clothing of the opposite sex. Who am I to question their reasons for doing so. It is their norm and really no different from my point of view then someone who dress in the Goth style. Not my idea of style but also not my place to question. Live and let live.
