Why does it even happen? Hello! I'm 16/female, just in case you needed that piece of information in order to answer.
Ok, so I've been realizing more and more that the people around me are getting depressed and thinking about killing themselves lately, and its making me really curious. Of course there are the common reasons, stress, depression, and schizophrenia, but what are all of the reasons why people commit suicide? Or self harm? I just want to know if I'm missing something here...
Don't worry, I'm not one of those dumbasses. I'm an extremely happy and grateful person. I'm just completely confused...
I appreciate all answers that come my way in advance, and have a wonderful day everyone :)

There are so many reasons why people commit suicide or self harm. They aren't dumbasses.
It's hard to understand things when you've never gone through it. It's obviously something you don't ever want to go through. I've never had depression, but I did take classes in psychology and learned a lot about disorders and such so it helped me understand those people.
For the majority, it's a chemical imbalance in the brain and that causes depression. If they don't seek help, they just think that's the only way out.
Some people think the situation they're in just won't go away and they think suicide is the only way out.
You'll hear stories of kids being bullied due to being gay, overweight, a certain race, ect and they end up hating themselves and don't even want to live because they don't like themselves.
You'll find many, many stories of what people go through. Some people go through traumatic things that you wouldn't even imagine and it really traumatized them to wear they just can't live normally and they see no reason to live anymore. ]
They aren't dumbasses. People go through different problems and, occasionally, those problems effect them too heavily and they feel they've nothing to live for. You and I will never understand how that feels because we don't experience what they experience. Sometimes life is just too tragic for some people.
If you put much thought beyond our comfortable surroundings, the world is a tragedy. There's so much rape, disease, and poverty all over the world that we don't consider daily. And why should we, right? Thinking about how a good chunk of the world is living in a nightmare doesn't solve anything. Some people don't have a choice but to think about it. Some people naturally feel hurt by other people's pain to such a degree that the state of the world depresses them so much that they don't want to be apart of it.
And sometimes people are just depressed without reason. It has nothing to do with their circumstances or the condition anyone else lives in. They just wake up not wanting to be awake. It's a chemical imbalance and these people often require medication to stop the pain that they feel.
These are the three circumstances that I see often. Add to that, your young age and how emotional younger people tend to be and that could explain why this seems more prevalent to you. ]
You have asked a wonderful question. unfortunately there is no one answer to it. You are not missing anything. The people who try to kill themselves do so for many reasons. The one common reason is at the time they are mentally ill, depression has caused them to perceive things not as they are but as the depression says they are.
Why they get so depressed is varied. Stress is a big factor. You could say that stress comes in all shapes sizes and colors. For what is stressful to me may not be stressful to you.
Because of the stress and other factors this person feels that the world has turned against them and would be better off without them. That the problem is insurmountable and the only way out is death.
Of course those of us not out of our minds with depression know better. There is not a problem that I am aware of that cannot be fixed with the right kind of help. This is where having good friends come in. Friends who will notice the change in someone and get them the help they need to fix themselves first and their problems second.
Its a sociological problem that we put upon one another mostly out of greed. At least that is the cause I see in dealing with this problem as a first responder. We sometimes ask or demand too much of some people.
Like I said in the beginning. There is no one answer, this has been my view. I hope it helps you understand a bit better. ]
