I personally use HMTL but sparingly. And I would suggest anyone new to it starts out the same way.
You'll probably want to buy a book on HTML. But on a smaller and simpler scale, you can find a lot of recourses online that will help you with very basic HTML coding like making your text bold, adding links, creating headings and stuff like that. Here are a few sources you might find helpful:
Your best bet is to start your website out as something simple, perhaps with just text and a few graphics, maybe if you're really ambitious a video or two.
Personally, I use Wordpress for almost all of my web design work. This provides a good hybrid between HTML use and a more simplistic setup.
