I dont have any feelings anymore?

Question Posted Thursday September 5 2013, 6:49 pm

So, I think I've been depressed for a while now.. the thing is I got used to being sad and down all the time.. nothing affects me anymore.. not even my long-distance boyfriend. I'm 16 year old female who does not feel anything anymore. I used to love my boyfriend so much, and now I don't know what happened.. it's not just with him its with every person I know.. even my best friends and my family.. they just annoy me.. I find no pleasure in anything anymore.. Sometimes I find myself happy with everything and I get my love back for him and everyone.. its just so frustrating.. my mother thinks its just because of hormonal changes in my teenage years.. but is it possible that I just dont love my beloved ones anymore? I feel crazy..

You don't always feel you love somebody. You know that feeling where you get mad at someone you love, but in the end you sort it out. Think about the meantime, you're only thinking about the problem, you're not thinking about your love for that person. Depression clouds your mind like anger. You'll drift away, later on maybe even feel like you don't deserve it when someone tells you they love you because you can't honestly tell them that you love them back. Depression is a serious problem, but sometimes the easiest thing is to help yourself through it.

Well, the best thing is to tell family, but since yours thinks it's a faze think about it this way. A depression like yours only really occurs to the most beautiful people, the most loved. The people who love without question, but in that loose time for themselves. Use this time that you're drawn away from telling people you love them, to say thank you for their love, and to see how beautiful you are, inside and out. This will help you feel the need to spread this beauty and love bottled up inside you, and every time you are the cause of a smile, you'll heal a little inside.

You haven't stopped loving your boyfriend, family or friends... they are just being given the time to find the beauty and love in you, this is just an opportunity to make your relationships stronger.

A smile is the best way, to be the cause of a smile the best. That's how you'll find you can still love, that's how you'll be loved and spread the love.

Your mother was partially correct when she said it is because of hormonal changes. Back when your grandmother and great grandmother were your age what you are going through was called a phase and every one felt teenagers would grow out of it. For the most part they did.

Today we know better and teenagers like you do not have to suffer. There is even a clinical name for the diagnose;"Teenage Depression." Caused in part by hormones and part by the stress of puberty. Because doctors today know the cause of the problem there is no need for any teenager or you to suffer with this. The doctors and or a clinical psychologist can help you with this problem.

You start by making an appointment with your family doctor for a complete physical. This is to rule out any organic reason for how you feel. Tell the doctor how you feel and that you feel you may be suffering from some form of clinical depression.

The doctor as part of your physical will screen you for depression. The screening consists of questions the doctor will ask you. Based on what you have written here you will most like score as clinically depressed which is teenage depression.

If there is no physical reason for you being this way the doctor will most likely refer you to other professionals for treatment. Follow the doctors instructions and see these other doctors. If medications are prescribed you should start to feel better after about 2 or 3 weeks as the medication builds up in your system.

Clinical depression is usually the result of too little of one or two hormones secreted into the brain to control mood and stress. The medication replaces missing hormones. When the sufficient amount of hormones is in you body you will start to feel better. Working with the psychologist will help you to learn to identify what is stressing you and how to handle it better.

To me, it sounds like you hit the nail on the head in your first sentence: depression. Several symptoms of depression, which is incredibly common in your age and gender group, include loss of feelings, apathy, and anhedonia (lack of ability to take pleasure in things). Additionally, hormonal changes certainly can cause havoc in a teenager's life (I was there once, too!). I can imagine how the possible combination of hormones and depression would make you feel lost, so here's my two-fold advice:
Seek help. Don't feel like you're somehow weak or insufficient by going to a counselor. I have close personal friends who highly recommend counseling as a way to deal with day to day issues as well as something as serious as depression. Anti-depressants can completely change your life around and cognitive behavior therapy (the most common therapy treatment for depression) has been shown to work in most cases. Clinical depression isn't something to mess around with.
The second part of my advice is to fully open up to those that love you and you love yourself. Fighting this war will be so much easier with support at your back. It seems that you've open up to your mother a little already. Don't stop! You'd be surprised how much just talking about what you're feeling may help. Talk to your boyfriend, talk to your best friend, talk to your siblings (if you have any). They want to be there for you and help you. I know it seems scary to face this thing by yourself or even with help, but the first step is always the hardest. And know this: you are NEVER alone. Some studies have shown that roughly one in three adults has had depression at some point in their life. Find those people and learn how they overcame it. This isn't something you have to tackle alone.
Good luck, and remember that there is always something worth living for, if you look hard enough.
