Help ASAP please: How to stop a panic/anxiety attack??
Question Posted Sunday July 28 2013, 10:09 pm
I've been having anxiety/panic attacks lately and I hate it... How can I get rid of it? I heard that you can make it go away from getting your mind off of it, but I can't think of anything to do.
I've tried breathing slowly and it's not working. Please help as soon as you can, please. Thank you.

The adrenaline that hits afterwards can feel like great fear or panic.
I can't say how much your subconscious mind may be involved but since all of our emotions and fears come from there, there must be something that originates there, that eventually overwhelms and takes over your whole body response.
Try talking to yourself during a time you are not under a panic attack. Ask your subconscious mind as if you are talking to a 2nd person inside of you, what is bothering it, what is causing you to feel this way. Once you know what those fears are, no matter how unreasonable (little kids have strange fears of monsters under their beds) address the fears and tell your subc. that there isn't anything like that to fear. Sometimes just the reassuring yourself is helpful.
But it is more likely you'll get better results seeing a professional. See a counselor if you havent already. If a regular counselor doesnt work, you may want to focus on a hypnotist as they will work directly with suggestions to your subconscious if you can't reach it yourself.
And then, then is also a hypnotist type of professional who takes you back in time to look for any events that may have been traumatizing to create these panic attacks. I will you wellness dear. [ Dragonflymagic's advice column | Ask Dragonflymagic A Question ]

Mine would give me the feeling of claustrophobia. So the first thing I needed to do was get out of the room I was in and into someplace that generally was cooler as an overheated and overcrowded room was the base cause.
If you can understand the cause and do something to remove the cause or remove yourself from the cause of the attack that is a big help. Next is controlling your breathing. Find something in the room to focus on, anything but a clock. Then focus intently on that thing, it could be a painting, a picture a vase whatever you can find to focus on. Then clear your mind and breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Continue to do this until your panic attack subsides and your breathing is under control.
Panic attacks are not normal. If you are getting them on a regular basis you should see your family doctor. Panic attacks are a warning sign, mostly because you are in danger. when you are not in danger then they are a warning sign that something is wrong and may need a doctor attention.
The best thing about a panic attack is that they can be managed with medication. If need be talk therapy with a trained psychologist to find the root cause of the attacks. [ adviceman49's advice column | Ask adviceman49 A Question ]

Its horrible, I know-I have had one. You need to remind yourself that panic attacks do not last forever.
This is what is going to help it to go away. Tell yourself this: panic attacks are there to keep me safe. It may feel like I am dying, or that I am in danger, but actually, nothing is going to happen.
When you breathe, you need to concerntrate on the breathing OUT. Breathe in abit (not to hyperventilate) but breathe out in a BIG SIGH for even longer than that. Repeat as many times as you like.
When your panic attack is over, try to meditate using 'mindfulness'. This is something we all need to do everyday-relax, else it can manifest itself as you and I have found.
But the main thing to remember is to go with the flow. All what has happened is the adrenaline has rushed to your head. You can regain control of the situation by telling yourself that it is a perfectly natural and normal human response, and that although you feel disgusting now, it will be over soon-they only tend to last for 20 mins max.
Lie down when you're having one/feel that dizzy feeling when you're about to have one. If you're with someone, tell them before it gets bad 'panick attack'.
For people who have never seen anyone have a panick attack before, they'll be like all panicky and worried themself. This is the last thing you need.
Get a cold flannel round your forhead if you're hot, get as much ventilation in the room as posssible, and close your eye, focusing on your breathing.
Breathe in calm and out smoke clouds. Look up the buzzing bees of worry analagy next time you're having one.
