suside? what about abortion?

Question Posted Tuesday April 30 2013, 6:12 pm

Here you have all these clowns trying to save you from death but at the same time, how many of you agree with abortion? The child doesn't want to die but you kill the child anyway. The adult or child that is alive and aware want's to die and you try to stop them. What a bunch of hypocrites.

Regardless of whether a person is pro-choice or pro-life we need to also respect, in the instance of your question, what the law has to say on the subject.

BY law A fetus is not a person until it is capable of living on it's own outside the womb. This is generally considered to be after the 27th week of pregnancy. So by law aborting a fetus is not the taking of a life. Still depending on your views on abortion you are entitled to your feelings that a life has been taken.

Now when it comes to suicide there is no question that a life is being taken. In fact in New York state there is still a law on the books which states that the penalty for suicide is death. Somewhat ironic that the penalty for attempting suicide is exactly what the person was trying to do.

Suicide and abortion are two separate events. There is no question in anyone's mind when it comes to suicide that a sanctioned human being is going to die if successful. This is where the difference comes in.

Being pro-choice or pro-life does not make anyone a hypocrite in trying to prevent someone from killing themselves. No one has the choice of taking there own life. So being pro-choice is not a factor. Being pro-life and attempting to stop someone from killing themselves would to my mind be an extension of that choice.

It is confusing yes. Hypocritical not from my point of view. Then again we are all entitled to our own thoughts in this area; pro-choice point of view.

I am also pro-choice and advise against suicide for the most part. I believe that everyone should have the right to choose for themselves.

When abortions are performed (for the most part) the fetus is at a very early stage of development and is not conscious. It has no desires and feels no pain. Abortion comes with its own emotional burdens, but sometimes it's the best option available.

Although I always advise against suicide, I do believe in assisted suicide as a viable option for those who are terminally ill and in chronic pain. However, I can't voice these opinions in answers to those looking for help in this regard because there are serious legal consequences, so I leave those questions for someone else to answer.

When I do answer suicide questions, it's almost always a certain type. It's the person who has lost all hope for their future, who is suffering from mental illness and can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. I answer these questions because I was that person, and I have seen that with proper treatment things can get better.

Yes, people should have the right to choose death. However, when you're mentally ill death can seem like the only way out, when it really isn't. You can't make a fully informed decision when you're that far in. That's why I ask people to hang on and keep trying: because at that point, it's not the individual choosing death, it's the illness causing them to make decisions that they wouldn't otherwise make.

So no, not a hypocrite or a clown. Just as you have your own opinions, I have mine.

I am pro-choice. I would like to see late term abortions restricted to only those very few cases where a mothers life is in danger, but prior to that I believe in accessible, on demand abortion. I don't believe there are reasonable arguments that a fetus prior to 18-22 weeks contains anything like the awareness that is deserving of any legal protection.

I also don't tell people on advicenators to commit sucide. I'm not actually opposed to sucide in all cases, but I don't feel that it would be responsible or reasonable to give pro-sucide advice to the clearly mentally ill individuals who come and ask about it on this annoymous website.

There is no hypocrisy in recongzing the huge difference between a perfectly sane women who does not wish to give birth, and a person so mentally disturbed and desperate they think offing themselves is a good idea. One of those choices is about making a reasonable, informed choice to protect the best possible life for the living, and one of them is about killing someone while in a deeply mentally disturbed state of mind.

But even if there wasn't such an obvious, glaring difference between these two situations, and even if you don't see the obvious glaring differences between the two, people would still be free to follow thier concience and NOT advise someone to kill themselves.

Bitch and moan all you like. No one is obligated to help you kill yourself. No one owes you that. People are free to behave in accordance with thier own conscience. All you'll ever get here is the best advice each person can offer you in the context of an annoymous online forum, and that is exactly what you are getting when people say don't kill yourself.
