How to see a doctor

Question Posted Tuesday April 30 2013, 4:21 am

I need to know how to go about seeing a doctor. I'm 18, 19 in 3 months. I don't live with my parents and I have no income or health insurance. I need to see someone regarding my scoliosis because I have a pretty bad rib hump and I want to do something about it instead of having to hide under baggy clothes. I just don't know what to do, or where to go. I live in Medford Oregon if that helps.

Thank you for your time

Not living with your parents doesn't necessarily disqualify you from their medical insurance. I think you have to be a student.

So basically, here are your steps.

1) Find out if your parents have medical insurance

2) Find out if you can get on their insurance if you are a student

3) Go to the closest community college and talk to their financial aid people. Find out if you can get on financial aid.

4) Get on financial aid, get into some classes. This would be a good opportunity to look into some kind of 1-2 year associates program that would give you an income of your own.

5) Use your student status to get onto their insurance

6) Use insurance to address scoliosis.

Yeah, it's a long term plan that won't fix the problem right now. But this is a problem worth spending the time to address.

If you can shortcut that by getting family to help, do so.

It's not perfect, it might not work, but it's a shot at getting insurance to cover the procedure.

One thing that is a certainty is to go to any hospital emergency and seek help. By law you cannot be turned away because you are unable to pay. The hospital must provide treatment to the level that is the standard of care for whatever problem you present with. Considering what your problem is I am not sure what that standard of care is. I'm sure it will depend on how your condition effects your quality of life.

It is also possible that being 18 and not having any medical insurance you would qualify for Medicaid coverage. You will be asked if your parents are insured and if you are attending college. If so their insurance carrier is required to continue your coverage under what is being referred to as Obama care.

Then their is also the Oregon Health Plan which you may qualify for and can apply for online. This is the link for that plan. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

If your parents are insured for health insurance and you are living at home or not though you are still in school; high school or college. Their employers insurance cannot drop you just because you turned 18. IF this is how you find yourself, being dropped because you aged out but are still in school, contact you states insurance commissioner for help.

look around the yellow pages or search google for a good doctor. (I'm sorry I'm not of any help in helping you find one) but make sure you call and ask first. since you do not have insurance i think it is best for you to compare prices. Doctors have different prices. for example i went to one that was $60 and then my friend told me about one that was 35. so i could've saved a bit.

Also, i work at a pharmacy and i am aware that many people do not have insurance but i suggest you try to apply to many. sometimes your job can provide that. Health insurance is a life savior. seriously! it can really help with medications and doctor evaluations. so, please i can not stress it enough, try to get health insurance.

Good luck with your search. i would also check the link someone provided for you above, and compare prices.

xoxo
ann

[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) call the numbers on this site as soon as possible. You likely qualify for coverage because you're under 19.
