So I was over at my friend's house for a sleepover, and we just woke up and

Question Posted Sunday March 3 2013, 7:36 am

found out that my BFF had gotten her period over night. Oh God-I've never had a period myself so I don't know what to do. My friend is crying on her sleeping bag trying to figure out what to do. She says her sister has pads in her bathroom, but she's scared to use them, even more scared of the concept of a tampon and telling her mom. Do we tell her mom or sister? How long to periods last? Will she get it at school? What if she gets hers at school, and what will happen if I ever get mine at school (or any public place?)? Does this mean she gets to get out of gym class (some of our other friends have gotten out of gym by giving the lady gym teacher an accused note)? There's a dance in about two weeks, and she's scared that her period might come up again like while she's dancing with her boyfriend or something, or that she won't even be able to go at all. What do we do? Oh yeah, she's a twelve year old girl (one year younger than me) and I'm asking this question since she don't have an Advincinators account. Any information will help, we go back to school tomorrow. Thanks!

Tell them both is my advice.Your period is a natural part of womanhood and is something you should be proud of.I dont mean go out and tell everyone but tell family and close friends.I can understand her emotions.I felt them too my first time.I got my first period when I was in school and I was soo embaressed but the teacher was so nice to me and understood, all that happend was i went home.Periods last anything up to 5 days usually but sometimes can be longer so dont worry. Her period wont affect her relationships.Pads are probably easiest to use as they just slip inside the knickers whilst a tampon can be uncomfortable if it isnt inserted correctly. My advice is to tell her mom and sister because they wont be angry,if anything they will be supportive.I hope you guys are ok :)

Whoa guys you need to calm down it's okay. Just tell her to change her underwear if they're ruined and then just put on a pad if she still doesn't feel comfortable with tampons. And yes she should tell her mom or her sister if she has any questions or needs them to get pads or tampons. For at school, what I do is I have a little pouch thing where I put pads in and then depending on how heavy it is that day I just go to my locker every few class periods and wait till the hall is empty and then shove it in my pocket and go to the bathroom. If you forget pads or tampons that day don't worry you can always just go to the nurse for some. Periods usually come every 28 days so I doubt in two weeks your friend will get her period again.. unless she does but that's okay its normal to have irregular periods for a while but if it goes on for more than a few years you should ask about it. Anyway just make you mark down when your period starts and ends on a calender so you can keep track of it and know when to be prepared for the next one. And don't worry if you have a pad or tampon on and you change it when you need to you won't have to worry about it. You can do pretty much anything when you have a period so you can still go to your dance and you can still do gym. If you have any cramps just take an advil or tylenol and you should be fine. It can be uncomfortable sometimes but it'll be okay. If you have anymore questions about this you can always ask me. Good luck! And don't cry this is normal! You'll be fine!

There's nothing to be tensed about it..its just normal..Tell her mom and she will show her how to use a tampon.. A nice superabsorbant extralong tampon will serve the purpose plus ultrathin for super comfort..Remember to change it every 4 hours or whenever you feel its feeling wet or notice the tampon filling up.. For starters periods may last for 4 days or about a month or more for the initial months..but later it shortens down to 4-5 days normally and 7-8 days for some women which is not a problem...If she has pre-menstrual syndrome issues like abdominal pain, swelling of breasts and nipples, irritative behaviour, soared nipples, etc.she might see a doctor..It normally occurs once a month after an interval of 28-40 days...normally 30 days..please tell her to mark the date every month..she needs to be more careful at that time.. and dont worry about gyym or dance classes.. every successful female dancer or player has periods and still they rock..!!!And dont worry about your periods starting in public place...if it happens, its for the first time and then take note of the date and be careful around those days from the next month.. take lots of water and if it bleeds a lot take iron tablets but only after consultation with a doctor..
