I'm 13 years old and i've had my period for a few years, I just used a tampon for the first time last night, I went to bed with it in, at about 2 pm the next day I tried to take it out and I was in tears the whole time, so I stopped and tried again in 30 minutes, I got it out, but it still felt like I was going to scream. It's about 10 pm and I haven't put one in. I'm not to fond of them, I can feel it, and it kind of hurts. I sit down and like, I know it's there. Please help..

MoRuthless answered Sunday February 17 2013, 12:20 am: Sleeping with a tampon in is not ok. Using the same one for 24 hours is insanity. TSS or Toxic Shock Syndrome is not something to chance. It can effect fertility very quickly and cause death easily. TSS is a bacterial infection that attacks the body. It is not uncommon, just not often reported due to embarrassment. Yes Tampons can be uncomfortable but should never cause pain like you described. Never ever use a tampon for more than 4 hours unless its an emergency. Change it more often if you had a heavy flow. Use pads at night. Your life and health are not worth any chance percentage. [ MoRuthless's advice column | Ask MoRuthless A Question ]
texasaggieprincess answered Saturday February 16 2013, 12:20 pm: I was he exact same way for the longest time. I used a pad up until I started college and realized pads were getting disgusting. Anyway, my problem was that it would hurt when I sat or moved or did anything for that matter. It wasn't until I took a women's health class and discovered what a lot of young girls don't know; your uterus (the one shedding the lining- where all the blood is coming from) is not directly straight up your vagina it's actually to the side. Meaning when you use a tampon putting the tampon directly up will cause pain and discomfort and blood can still leak out. You need to angle the tampon (I usually angle it back towards my butthole) then push the tip up. I'm sure there are YouTube videos explaining this as well. Anyway hope this helps! The reason why it may hurt a bit when you have it in is because tampons expand when they suck up the liquid (blood) and your vagina might be very tight because yoir still a really young age. I understand what your going through because i went through this when i was 10.. Just keep trying and breath because it will hurt because your very tight and tensing doesnt help that. Well i hope i helped.just breath and try to get used to it. [ flexi01's advice column | Ask flexi01 A Question ]
karenR answered Friday February 15 2013, 10:49 pm: Its OK to sleep with a tampon in, but you should never leave one in for longer than 8 hrs. When you do they can be painful to remove. There is also the risk of toxic shock syndrome if left in for a long time. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
That being said, tampons are not for everyone. If they don't feel comfortable to you, just use a pad. Keep some tampons around if you want to swim in the summertime & just use a pad the rest of the time. Nothing at all wrong with doing that. [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
