I'm currently a college student living in a rental home with my friends. My grades haven't been the greatest the past year and I'm really trying hard to get better in school. Something I noticed is that I have terribly study habits. I hate studying in quiet, I always need some kind of noise around me, whether its music, tv, people talking etc. I can never study for more than 30 minutes straight, otherwise I get off track and antsy. So i'm trying to get a new study habit. I've tried studying at my school library, but most of the time I get sidetracked and look for people I know. Plus, I hate walking all the way there and back. I've tried studying in my room in my house, but I live in the basement alone and its too quiet. If I turn on my music or Tv I get distracted. I've tried going to a coffee place, but then I get the urge to spend money on coffee (I'm on a budget and need to cut down on this) plus I would have to drive at least 10 minutes to get there.. too long..
What are some study habits/tricks that work for you? Do you have any advice for me what I could do?

I used to have issues focusing on studying as well, and it didn't help that as a computer science major most of my studying and homework was done on the computer, so I would study till I got antsy (30mins-1hour) and then take a short break (10-15mins) and then go back to studying. It made studying take longer, but overall I found I absorbed more information. You could also try to find non-distracting music, maybe something classical without words?
Depending on your school/major you could also try listening to podcasts on the subjects you should be studying as background noise when you are doing other things. Even if you don't absorb much of it, it'll make it easier to learn when you get down to studying. [ russianspy1234's advice column | Ask russianspy1234 A Question ]
