My advice would be to find out what level of education the state you wish to practice in requires in order to practice. If a PHD is required I would recommend psychology as this gives you a wider area in which to practice.
While you can if you wish do social work; a psychology degree allows too work and practice as a psychologist as well. Sociology somewhat limits the scope of your practice to just certain areas of sociology [ adviceman49's advice column | Ask adviceman49 A Question ]
