I'm not from north america. That's for starters. I really wan't to be succesful in college and have a good life. But I don't know what I should study that I would like but that could also help me in economy. I LOVE to write and draw and was thinking about journalism but I like it better in English. Where I'm from universities don't cost as much as in U.S. but there is nothing that has to do with what I like AND in English. I'm 16 but tons of people keep telling me that I need to choose from now and I know they are right. It also scares me going to college and ending up miserable.
And I'm also 16, and also (not making this up) I want to be a journalist.
Firstly, you need to do something you love. Because then you'll be able to really progress in you're career, and you'll be motivated at least enough to get you out of bed in the morning.
Why don't you check out for journalism degrees? If not, then you could always do an english degree as thats what you're good at, and maybe even a postgraduate degree somewhere else in journalism?
But what I've done is I've already gained work experience even just for a week in a public relations department with the local council writing press releases. So this could help.
Alot of the time, universities and employers don't want a bore or a know it all. They want someone who has a bit of an edge and stands out.
So I'd suggest you write articles and send them into newspapers and trade magazines. You're going to get a few no's at first, but then the yes will eventually come. And this shows you have a passion for the subject and stand out from people that are only able to perform well in exams but have no redeeming qualities.
So to reap, its you're choice what degree you do, but I'd make sure (like me) that you do extra pieces of writing and gain recognition for this right now, constantly, as it'll show you've got that pasion for the subject most employers want.

Second, I don't know you but I think you should follow your heart and do what you love. You'll have to live with yourself no matter what you do and, frankly, even if you study something that's "not practical" such as art, for example, if you really are passionate about it, you'll find a way to earn a living, such as teaching art or creating art for an ad agency, for example.
Third, you don't really have to choose. You're young and whatever you "choose" right now will probably change a year from now. And whatever you choose next year will change again the following year! You're at that stage in life. Can you take a break before starting college? Maybe travel or work for a little while? Or take on an internship? Or maybe you can start college and just explore by not only taking a lot of different classes but getting involved in extracurricular activities. (The great thing about college is that you can be a DJ at the school's radio station, write for the student newspaper, etc. You can try careers out & see what happens.)
I think you should explore as much as you like. If someone forces you to "choose" then you can choose something temporarily to make them happy, but you can always change your mind later.
Remember, it's your life and only YOU will have to live it. You can leave home, run away from your family and friends, but you can never run away from yourself. Be true to yourself, follow your heart and do what you love.
But please don't take out any loans and put yourself in debt like I did. Then all your choices will be taken away and you'll spend your life trying to pay bills you'll just never be able to pay. Debt is like a prison. Keep yourself free.
God bless you and I hope you have a wonderful life, a better one than I had. (I live in the US, by the way, and it is not a good country to live in right now, so I'd advise against it. I've heard good things about Canada--Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto, though.) [ ArtsyGrrl's advice column | Ask ArtsyGrrl A Question ]

It's much better and respected to get into Journalism from studying English Literature rather than studying 'journalism' in it's pure form which is often seen as a 'non-sense' course that is not taught properly. And studying English is generally a very useful subject. You can go into Law, Politics, Broadcasting etc with it.
And why not study abroad? The USA is not your only option. Europe is also an excellent option. Here in the United Kingdom, we have the best universities in the world. I.e. Cambridge is on the top of the world league tables.
