Does getting braces hurt? What Can I eat when I get braces?
Question Posted Saturday May 5 2012, 12:29 pm
So I'm getting braces in a few weeks and I was just wondering what it's like. Does it hurt? What can I or can't eat? Just basic things because we didn't talk about any of this when I went to the orthodontics. Thanks

Your mouth does get really dry though becuase of the suction (tube with air) and it your mouth is open for so long. You can't lick your lips because they put a mouth retractor to hold your mouth open but you get used to eat, you have to have it in because they need your mouth open to put the braces in. They glue the brackets on individually and then but a wire on. There's pulling and tugging in your mouth but it doesn't really hurt.
The time they take to put them depends on if you are getting only top ones on or both top and bottom. In general I would say 45 minutes to an hour to get braces on. It took 2 hours for me because I was getting braces on the top and the bottom.
Once you have them on it will hurt for a couple of days so I suggest to take some paracetamol if it does hurt. It will take time to get used to them, it feels very weird having them on at first but you get used to it. You might also talk a bit weird but again you will get used to it.
What can you eat?
You can't have chewing gum, things that might get stuck like popcorn, corn on the cob. I would avoid tortilla chips, hard candy, taffy, hard nuts and caramel.
You can have fruit but if it's apple I would chop it into small pieces. You can eat anything really apart from what I listed above on what you can't eat.
Some people can chew and some can't. You have to get used to chewing because my first dinner I couldn't chew but I could just about swallow it down. I was going to be there for ever so I put all my food into a blender and mushed it all up. It did the trick, I could eat! My advice would be to stick with soft foods and soup.
Ask any questions. It's important to voice any concerns. I'm sure thy will tell you if you do ask about cleaning your teeth with the brackets and about putting on the elastic bands (if you do have them).

No sweat just give them a call and ask them what you are concerned about. They will tell you as that's what they are there for. They'll definitely tell you everything to avoid and what pain is and isn't normal. [ solidadvice4teens's advice column | Ask solidadvice4teens A Question ]

Avoid eatting anything sticky
Candy, Gum, marshmellows even popcorn
Be sure to brush daily to avoid stains on your teeth! After you have braces put on avoid anything cold for a few days.
