What is your input on tipping at restaraunts? I tip when I eat out but I also feel 'why tip when they are paid by the hour?' I understand that waiters/waitress make little but when one pays for their meal I do get why it is expected.
Example: Why tip a pizza boy when they are paid minimum wage hourly? Why tip a barista?
I am looking for inputs on how people feel, I feel both ways. We shouldnt have to tip... We pay for our food and we pay for good services.

Servers in a restaurant in many states are allowed to be paid under minimum wage as it is expected that tips will provide the difference if not exceed minimum wage. In fact their employers withhold taxes based on 15% to 18% of the total of each of their checks less any tip outs required to busboys and bartenders. If you are not tipping at least that amount they actually lose money on your check.
Now while tipping is expected it is something the server earns by providing good service. If the food is cold when you are served that is the servers fault and you can show your displeasure to the server in the size of your tip. But if the food is hot and not to your liking that is not the servers fault but the fault of the Chef and the establishment. When this has happened to me and the manger adjusts my check I still tip based on the amount of the item which should have been included in the check. It was not the servers fault the food was bad and I don't feel it is right to penalize the server over something they had no control over.
Yes you pay for good service by tipping and by the size of your tip. Where I live for good service the minimum tip is 18%. I generally tip 20%. If the service is extraordinary I will go as high as 25% including the total of the check with taxes. If the service is poor I may go as low as 5% but I always leave something. It's also a hard job that requires a lot of patience, I know I couldn't do it (just working in retail is bad enough!). If a waiter is rude and doesn't do a great job, I wouldn't tip very much, but if they do a good job, why not? Being rewarded keeps them motivated to keep working hard, which is good for everyone.
I work at a regular per-hour job, and it can be very frustrating and demotivating knowing that no matter how great or bad I do I still get paid the same. If I was allowed to be tipped (in fact, I can get fired for accepting one) I think it might make a big difference.

Also, it's polite to tip waitresses, because like you said, they don't make a lot of money, and they are serving you, taking the time to make sure you have everything you need. If someone was rude, or wasn't doing their job well I wouldn't leave a tip, or I'd leave them a smaller tip than 15%. Hope I gave you good input!
