orphans answered Wednesday April 4 2012, 5:33 am: Hello,
If you're new to wine, I feel white is usually best. I know many wine drinkers who stray away from red wine, but everyone enjoys white. Also, some people get adverse reactions to red wine i.e. they get drunk very fast, vommit, and get terrible hangovers. That is just from a couple glasses! But this is rare.
So my advice is to stick to a white such as Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon blanc. I love Pinot Grigio, as it's fresh and zesty, without that odd aftertaste some wine gives. It is dry however (not sweet), and so you may either like that or not. These are very good wines for people who are new to them.
If you do want to have a go at a red, may I suggest something like a Beaujolais Nouveau? It is sweet, and not too heavy. It may be hard to get, as it doesn't age well. Pinot Noir is an alternative that is widely available. Stay away from heavy Claret and Shiraz wines, if you are new to wine.

For white, go for a chardonnay or a pinot grigio. These are very popular wines, go well with food, and are fine to drink "young". Most wines will get more expensive the older they are.
