Once a women starts her period she should start seeing a gynecologist as part of her yearly physical. Your reproductive health is just as important as your physical health and if you have an issue with your reproductive health it can cause problems with your physical health.

While your with your GYN is the time to ask any questions you may have. We receive many questions on things like; tampons vs Pads, how to insert a Tampon, regulating periods, heavy menstrual flows, cramping and a variety of other questions we are truly not qualified to answer. The GYN is is qualified to answer and you will not embarrass the doctor with any of your questions or concerns. Just remember the only foolish or dumb question is the one you don't ask.

Now that you are over 14 your visits with the doctor are totally confidential. Nothing said and nothing about the examination or treatment can be told to your parents without your expressed written permission. This is by a Federal Law called HIPPA.

So ask your doctor any and all questions you may have and get the answers you need to properly care for yourself. While there make sure to have the doctor teach you to do a proper self breast exam. Early detection and treatment for any lump found can save your life. I know this personally as my wife is in her third year cancer free because of self breast examinations done each week to herself. Breast cancer can strike at any age.

It all depends on what you are going for.

If you are going to seek birth control, They will likely ask you a bunch of questions and prescribe you a birth control that is suitable for you.

If you are going for an exam, They do a pap smear basically what that is when they do an exam up there.
