Have some courage and just go for it. Then you'll know what guys deal with in terms of being afraid of rejection and what to do if you get a negative response.

get to know him. flirt with him, talk to him, dont be afraid to be yourself. and once you get to know him and he knows you. just tell him you like him. rejection sucks but thats apart of life, same thing if you get embarrassed its apart of life. you just have to face your fears and go for it.

Learn to flirt. It is harder to do through text messaging and IM, but it isn't impossible.
Then you don't really have to tell him you like him. He'll either flirt back, or let you know he likes you, or he won't and won't have to be embarrassed.
There is an art to flirting, and if done correctly, you do't have to risk embarrassing yourself or rejection.
