Why do you get sleepy after you've been crying?

Question Posted Sunday July 17 2011, 11:33 pm

Hi, I'm Gracie and I'm 13 and I noticed that whenever I'm done crying I get really sleepy and a awful headache. Why? And why do my eyes get red and puffyish?

This is perfectly normal.
The reason you are so tired is because your body is releasing a certain horomone and the reason they turn red and get puffy is because its a chemical reason, and there is salt in your tears.

So when this happens it's perfectly normal, take a nap or get some rest, and maybe when you wake up but a cold spoon under your eyes or wet tea bags.

Don't freak out, it happens to all of us. (:

Hope this helped. (:

I can explain why you might be getting headaches.. its because tears are pretty much salt water coming out of your tear ducts. Its almost like sweating.. water is coming out of you. Therefore, you need to make up for all of the water coming out and you need to take in the same amount. Meaning, if you don't drink enough water (especially if you cry or sweat) then you get dehydrated, which causes dizziness and causes headaches.

So after you've cried for a while, it helps if you drink a glass of water or 2.

You might get sleepy because (like the other person said) you're using a lot of energy to cry. When you're done crying, you might realize that you'll sigh and its just exhausting.. almost like working out and then being super tired afterwards.

Everyones eyes get red and puffy after crying for a long time. I'm not sure WHY it happens... but its normal :) If you want to reduce the puffiness, take a washcloth and run it under cold water and hold it over your eyes for a few minutes to make the swelling go down. As for the redness, there's eye drops at a regular pharmacy store that is meant to reduce redness. I've used them and the redness goes away within 5-10 minutes.

I'm sorry for whatever you're crying about.. i'm here for you if you want to talk about it :/ Just inbox me and i'll answer!

well crying takes up a lot of energy. You get emotionally drained. It also puts a lot of strain of your face. You are using a lot of muscles that you normally don't use on your face. it also seems like you have little control over it when you cry like you can't keep a straight face and when you try to stop, it puts strain on your face. it's like a cycle of muscle aches.
