Serious question! How do you get over a fear of turkeys??

Question Posted Tuesday July 5 2011, 6:14 pm

Okay well I am extremely, deathly afraid of turkeys and it gets annoying because my neighbors just got some and I'm afraid to go outside. I got attacked by one when I was little and I never really got over it. I need some tips on how to get over this fear. This is serious I am not joking!

I had a similar problem once my fear was of chickens, when I was little my grandpas rooster was crazy and he would chase people never bite but chase... then my in laws decided they were going to get some chickens, see my husband doesnt get along well with his family so we dont communicate often, well we decided to drop by and visit one day and I got out of the car and there they were freakin chickens in a fenced in area that I had to walk by, they freaked me out.... I was so afraid of them I wanted to leave, because see they hadnt finished building their chicken coop thing yet and we had to walk through the fenced in area to get in the house... well my husband did talk me into going inside, when I walked through I tried to avoid them and they avoided me guess they are just as afraid of us as we are of them.... it took a little while that day to not be afraid of them but little by little we got use to eachother, and now I think they are so cute and fun to feed... talk to your neighbors and tell them how you feel about the turkeys, and ask if they can hold one while you check it out and maybe even pet it... maybe even go where they are and have them walk around you for a bit and slowly get use to them... its okay I am sure your neighbors wont let the turkeys hurt you

Turkeys can be mean little buggers. Really, all animals can be nasty if you give them reason to be. I've been chased/attacked by ducks and geese a few times, so I know how you feel. You should definitely talk to your neighbors about it. They probably wont pen in their turkeys to accommodate you, but if you are respectful toward them they may be able to teach you ways to avoid offending their turkeys and ways to scare them off if they try to chase you. They live with the things so they should have some idea of how turkeys behave.

As for your fear, try learning everything you can about them. Read about their habits. Look at pictures of them. Look up videos of them doing stupid turkey things like fighting their reflections and making silly noises. Even if after all this turkeyfication, you are still afraid of them, you will hopefully have learned something to help you eventually face them.

Good luck conquering your fear! I'm still nervous around domesticated birds, but I don't mind facing them if I have to. Hopefully you can get to that point with turkeys.

Try eating one ;) Seriously, if the neighbors have them on their property go and talk to them and explain the irrational fear. Have them let you meet with one in a controlled setting and then you should be fine. It's all psychological. If that doesn't work mention it to a doctor as the fear is a mental blockage.

Ask the neighbors if you can see the turkeys. ( In a cage) and just look at them touch them let the turkeys know your not afraid. They are harmless. :)
