How do you know that God is real?

Question Posted Saturday June 11 2011, 1:07 am

Hi Im Gracie and Im 13. How do people know that God is real? I think I believe in God, but Im not sure. I pray sometimes, but when I do, I dnt feel anything. Its like Im talking to myself, and sometimes I feel a little weird. My dad says he believes in God but he's not really religous. he only goes to church because his girlfriend Katie makes him (shes SUPER religuous). Anyways I guess what I want to kno is, If you cant see him or hear him, how do you know he's there. If there is a God, will I go to hell because I wasnt sure that he was real? If God's real, do all the people that belive in other religions go to hell?? Its really confusing!

Gracie-
God is very real! The way we know He is real is by seeing all around us the things He has created, and by reading the Bible, which is the main way he has provided for us to really get to know him. Did you know that the Bible is full of historical events? Some people believe it is full of myths, but that is because they have not done their research. There have been thousands of archaeological findings that have proven the Bible true, but there has never been any archaeological findings that have proven it false. Also, there are many prophecies in the Bible that later came true, including many prophecies about Jesus. There have been many people who have tried to proove that the Bible is not true, but they ended up becoming believers instead! (One person who tried to do that that you might have heard of is C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia.) One of the answers you received said that you can decide for yourself what God is like and sort of create your own religion that is to your liking. Please don't believe that non-sense. What good is making up a fake god and then worshipping it? That would be a big waste of time! If God is real, then He is who He is. Just like you are real and you are who you are. Someone could imagine all sorts of things about you - they could "create" a Gracie in their mind that is to their liking but that Gracie would not be real, she would just be a figment of their imagination. You said you think you you believe in God, but you are not sure. The Bible says that if you seek God with all your heart, you will find Him. My advice to you is to make it your life's purpose to seek after God. I have just prayed for you. I have asked God to reveal himself to you, so that you would know that he is real. I asked him to give you the gift of faith, so that that you can believe in him and be saved. If you really want to know if God is real, and you really want to get to know him - then find a Bible and start reading it! Maybe start with the Gospel of John. Before you read, pray - just tell God that you really want to know if he is real, and you really want to know him. He wants you to know him, so he will answer that prayer! He will help you to understand what you read in his word. The Bible is full of wonderful promises to believers. One of them is "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart." I know that is true! May God bless you and give you the desires of your heart!

Sorry Gracie, there is no God. Let me tell you how this whole religious nonsense got started:

Man is basically a fearful, insecure creature whose primarily afraid of death. So man devised religion as a way to feel in some kind of control by having a series of beliefs that seem to explain the world around them, nature and their reason for being. It also usually tells people that if they follow certain precepts they will attain everlasting life in paradise after their days on earth are numbered.

Then religion gets co-opted by authoritarian elements in society in order to try to justify the political leaders' positions (go to Google and look up, "divine right of kings" as an example). Religion has always been imposed at the point of a sword or gun. History is clear on that. For example, Christianity wasn't chosen freely by europeans back in the fourth or fifth century, but rather, the likes of the Roman Emperor Constantine and the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne imposed it on the locals at the pain of death. Then from there the religion makes its way into the cultural orthodoxy of society.

So the sum of this is that religion is a happy bullshit story to allay people's fears about death, give them some kind of hope that one day the murderous and criminal in society will indeed be given some kind of retribution and that there is nothing they can do about who rules them because God ordained it so.

So when you get no response or feel nothing when you pray it is because there is nothing there. Your prayer is merely a wish for something to happen (or not happen) and little more. If you want to express your wishes in the form of a prayer, hey, go for it, do what makes you happy.

But all religions are hustles and are more about wealth and power than anything else. Religion has been on the wrong side of just about every major historical, philosophical and scientific question throughout the existence of mankind and the bureaucracies of those religions have usually been filled by little more than scoundrels.

When you get into college, read a book called, "Escape from Freedom" by Erich Fromme. Then you will understand more of what I am talking about here.

MCC answered Wednesday June 15 2011, 7:38 am:
Hi Gracie, primarilly the main thing you need to believe in the existance of God is faith. We walk by faith not by sight. However personally other than having faith completely in God I see all the natural creations like mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and all the beautifully scenery and I know without a doubt that is God.
Their also small things which happen like the ''small voice'' or a ''strong feeling'' which maybe told you not to go somewhere or don't do something.
Ofcourse their also many many other things that God does but faith is the main thing.
Will you go to hell because you doubt? I won't give a direct yes or no but I will say this. If you live in doubt as to wether God exists that will make you a lukewarm Christian which is worse than not believing at all. As the one before me said just pray in faith with a pure heart and ask God what you want Him to show you. And also associate with other strong Christians, ask them advice and read your King James Bible. That will strengthen your faith.
On hell, unfortunately yes those who don't believe in Christ and ONLY CHRIST are heading to hell. That doesn't only mean other religions but even other deceived Christians and the lukewarm ones. The best part of all this is their is ALWAYS HOPE for salvation for those are still alive. That's why Christians were commanded to preach the gospel to the unbelievers.
If I may add, signs and wonders follow the believers NOT unbelievers. That's why atheists always ask for proof on existence of God but never see them or rather refuse to acknowledge that some things its only God who can do.

Gracie, God is real and He is watching out for you. He knows what you're thinking and how you are feeling. And trust me, everybody feels like that when they're praying. I do all the time. When you pray(and I'm not sure that you do this, but I did before)you don't have to bother with all the thank yous and praises unless you really mean them. Just tell God what you are feeling, let him know that you're not sure if he's real. Look for the little things that God shows himself through. Its not always miracles, although it could be. And I don't think you'll go to hell for not being absolutely positive he's real. God said if you have faith as little as a tiny seed, you can move mountains. And I'm a Christian, so I think that yes, other religions are wrong. And I could go on and on about what I belive, but I can't force my beliefs on you. You have to decide. (You could talk to a pastor or a Christian friend or chat with me if you want more info.)

No one can confirm the existence of any God or any other deity. Faith is just believing there is a God, despite the lack of physical proof. We can't really tell you if you're going to hell for not believing either. None of us can tell you anything about the afterlife. Some die hard religious types might make convincing arguments, but you have to figure out what you believe for yourself. And frankly, you probably aren't spiritually deep enough at 13 to figure it all out.

Nobody really knows whether God is real, or what God is really like. My best advice is to research a bunch of religions, and find the things that you like about each one to get an idea of what kind of God you would like to believe in. Just like there's no wrong way to eat a Reese's peanut butter cup, there's no one right way to worship or believe in God.
